I've been looking over a few niches and I came across this certain niche which gets 27,000 monthly searches but has very low competition. I was wondering how a site with only 3 backlinks is ranked #1 while sites with 50+ or 120+ are ranked under it. The 3 backlinks aren't too strong either, the sites the backlinks are on are quite weak sites. The site ranked #1 is a single paged blogspot blog which looks like this exact-match-keyword.blogspot.com
I'm quite new to seo, I actually have no knowledge other then good content + backlinks = rank. How is this site #1? The 1 page it has is quite weak to be honest nd doesnt have much content. I own the .net EMD for this niche, should I be able to outrank this site with good content alone?

If that number one site has only three backlinks and those are quite weak sites, then, I think you should try that strategy but write and publish better content. That's how I see it. I will mimic what the webmaster is doing but I'll feed my site with better contents so I'll be a step or two ahead of that site.

You got to test what you're thinking. That's the only way you can find it. Our fellow BHWers may say "yes, go ahead." Others may say, "no, you do this first, etc..."
But that's what worked or has worked for them. You got to test it on your own with your own time, style, strategy, personality, belief, among others.

should I be able to outrank this site with good content alone?

You have to look at the main domain it's pr9,yes this will be a sub domain but an emd on a subdomain of a pr9 site has some clout without any backlinks,it may be aged as well. Can you outrank it,sure, decent content and high pr links from relevant sources should do it.I also agree with the above comment, test,it's how you learn.

BTW I gave you thanks for not exposing the url you've done it sensibly and I'd say received answers which will help you in return and it looks like everyone was posting the same answer at the same time lol

Which tool do you use to check backlinks? It might happen that Google has indexed the backlinks pointing to that url faster than other tools

It's pretty simple -

1) It's blogspot.
2) It's probably got a good chunk of content on the site.
3) Google automatically makes blogspot's SEO optimized.
4) It's blogspot.
5) 3 backlinks with medium authority are 10x better then 50 spammy backlinks..
6) It's blogspot.

There's alot of misspellings on the site, its unorganized, there's MAYBE 10 sentences on the site. It has a good domain, that's all I can see.

What would a good step would be creating a similar blogspot in the niche, add some great content and eventually drop or link in there.I'd only build decent links to these and wouldn't spam them.Just slowly build high quality links to your own blogspot and you'll have a great link which will help your cause. You could even try to get a near match emd blogspot and rank it.If you choose this option add other links as well or it could backfire. Most businesses etc have a blog so it's a natural thing to do.

Yup, that's what I plan on doing.

Hi, it's possible.
The reason is good on-page seo and unique content.
EMD too or social signals.

i also HAVE blogspot , i out rank other pr1 sites easily .

you need - emd , some content ( one post per keyword ) , get some fb shares , tweets .

biggest reason IT IS A BLOG SPOT .

If that's the case then it only means you can rank easily for that keyword. But that site being in the top spot can be an effect of serp dance especially if that site is new.

Been up since July 2011, dunno when it became #1 though

You will be surprised google plus profiles rank even better ;)

Maybe the on page SEO is better focused for the keyword, and the sites below it are less focused, therefore not quite as good a match for the search query as the number 1 spot.

Not all SEO is off page.

We need to analyse its competitors, they may be got penalty for google. It may be there secondary keyword for other competitors which they don't concentrate more on rankings. And most importantly we can't see all backlinks from a website. They may hided there backlinks. There are number of factor to be considered here, unless we don't know who are there competitors we can't endup with right solution.
And i totally don't agree with blogger blogs outrank other .com sites. I never saw any reasonable blogger outranked a .com site.

Probably the PR and PA on the baclink sites are much higher then then ones on the 150+ links the higer the PR and PA for backlinks the better the quality and ranking
