With the majority of SEO tools containing features like
  1. Link Competitors Analysis
  2. Spy on your competitors backlinks
  3. Know where your competitors are getting their backlinks from
etc.

For me personally, I just build my own links. I won't spend time & resources to analyze my competitors backlinks at all.

How many of you (SEO Businesses or SEO Consultants) are actually using this technique to improve your SEO?

Question Rephrase: How are you using this data that you analyzed to improve your SEO?

It's the first thing I do lol.. I won't bother if the competition is too high relevant to the amount of monthly searches..

So I'd say it's EXTREMELY important..

Also it tells me how powerful my linking structure and SEO should be.. no point going all out if there's hardly any competition..

If you don't know your enemy it's either like taking a water pistol to a full blown war or a rocket launcher to a kid's paintball party..

It's all depend on your strategy bro! If you believed there is no competition ! There is none.. there some people here that can rank for anything.. I mean anything..

regardless of your ranking capabilities it is always the best to check your competition, to see what the costs for ranking would be. You can`t copy a link profile if you don`t go deep on tier 2 3 and copy them too, so a lot of work involved in copying something that you could do better if you spend some time :)

I'm usinh these tools form somewhat broaded point of view: analyzing links of a domain (I'm going to rank, I'm going to buy etc)
D

I don't know any SEO who doesn't do competitor analysis, I always thought that it was an important part of any SEO strategy?

Now, after analyzing your competition & what do you do with the data of their links? Assuming, the competition is easy-medium for your SEO skills, do you copy & +1 them or just follow your own SEO strategy to compete with them in the SERPS?

Yes, I know all SEO who do competitor analysis, but the main question I'm trying to get across here is

"How do you use the data you get from Link Competitor Analysis?"

I personally believe it is extremely important, if not the most important factor, because if the competition is already too fierce, then its worthless to even try for months.

It really depends on your SEO strategy.

To me, seeing where my competitors backlinks come from is probably the least important thing and is a complete waste of my time.

However, if you plan on copying a competitor's backlinks, are trying to understand how a site is ranking, or are planning on buying aged domains...then a backlink analysis tool would be vital to your strategy.

Whenever I get into any niche, I first go through my competitor's backlinks.

My post on another thread -

Usually, scraping backlinks of competitors is a very good idea only when you know what to do next

In my case, after scraping, I do the following analyzing -
  • Check how many backlinks are dead, and how many are alive. Filter the links according to them.
  • How many unique domains
  • How many IPs
  • Average OBL per backlink
  • Backlinks FIRST started pouring in
  • How many platforms
  • Average PR of backlinks
  • Most used language of backlinks
  • Anchors used
  • If the backlink building is still going on or it stopped a few weeks ago

After analyzing, I just copy the whole thing and implement on my own site. I mean, if the competitor site has backlinks from 50 platforms, I will get from 100. If the average OBL of his/her site's backlinks are 50, I will try to get links with 40 OBL and so on.

The best part will be trying to have a link from your competitor's site's backlinks aka reverse engineering.

Hope that helps

So, your strategy with analyzing competitors backlinks is to so-called "add 1 more backlinks than them" to outrank them? With the current Google algo, does this even work?

Another way people use link competitor analysis is to make a Yes/No decision before going for a keyword.

Other than that, what other techniques/actions are people doing with the link competitor analysis data?

You always should spy on competition and acquire the best links they've got. This is the easiest way to kick start your campaign.

1 extra link....I didn't say about getting "1 Extra". Yes, with the current algo, it works. I never cared about those Google algos or whatsoever. If you want to make money. test and implement.

I also don't start until analyze competitors backlinks profile and the sources. It gives me all information like their anchor text diversification, In what kind of sources they are getting backlink from. I don't bother to do same as they did, even do better from them, this will really much help rank for keywords.

There is tools that will help you analyze your competitors backlinks.
My favourite are ahref and seomajestic. Both are really very good.
Try one of them and check the sources and quality as well as other criteria and do continue your link building process by analyzing the correct method.

I use the data to see how my competitors have constructed their link building, which will allow me to determine how much man power I am going to need. I also run back link checks on their back links to see if they've implemented any multi tiered strategies. If they have you can bet they know what they're doing.

It really depends on your strategy. Some people try to replicate link profiles, others filter out and extract back link gems and then focus on their own linking strategies.

Hope that helps :)

I need to know what my comp is doing its the "art of war"

Your top competitors have likely spent thousands upon thousands of dollars discovering what works. Why not use their results as your starting point?
