Despite the recent crackdown on spammy backlinks I have a competitor who still kicking my rear with nothing but blatant link-spam.
The niche isn't extremely competitive with only ~300 searches per month for the exact keyword. But in examining my competitor's backlink profile I've found about 3 dozen exact match anchor text link on pages that show one thing to Googlebot and performs a quick refresh to a 404 page for real website visitors. The competitor has almost zero links to this particular page other than the spam links. In fact, almost 70% of the entire domain's backlink profile are what I consider spammy.
I can't help but think it is only a matter of time before Google slaps them down in the rankings. But I've been thinking the same thing for well over a year now. Anyone else seeing something similar?
