Local Keyword Research

I apologize for the noob question but I've heard mixed things and I really need to get this down. Also if there is a thread available for this already, or I've posted in the wrong forum I apologize. Please direct me to the correct place to ask my question. Thank you.

With that said, I'm currently working with an offline client as a business solutions provider. I work with video production, graphic design, web design and photography. But I'm not entirely caught up on local SEO, so I've run into a road block when he's asking for my services with this. So currently on the project, I'm attempting to update the copy throughout the site so that it is SEO optimized for local search.

The only two things I believe I need:
? Local Keywords - Originally I planned to do keyword research
? SEO Webpage Content - Outsource to freelancer

So my road block is this, the client offers their service in more than one county so I'm confused on how to start searching for keywords. Should I focus on keywords like: Pool Service, Pool Renovation. Just to start off with? Or should I immediately begin to search for long-tailed keywords? Or should I just outsource the whole thing, and where would be a good start to do that?

I have to agree with sukataetumba in pricipal, however depending on how in depth you want to go with your services long tail keywords can be pretty easy to target locally. This depends on the local market an the niche. I did pretty well when I was offering services locally just getting listed in the online yellow pages and local authority directories. If the local authority directories offer backlinks with local keywords on a low saturation niche in small to mid market, you are golden.

To further expand upon what somebodysomewhere said, it is many times easy to rank for local keywords, especially if there is little competition. Just remember that to target local keywords and make sure your page copy is relevant to those local keywords.

Targeting generic keywords like "divorce lawyer" probably isn't going to do you a bit of good because the competition is too high. And even if you did rank #1, if you are a lawyer in Atlanta, someone clicking your site from Los Angeles isn't going to become a client.

So instead of targeting a generic keyword target something like this: (generic keyword) + (location). That means making sure you have location data in the copy of your website. And don't spam the keywords to death with endless repetitions of different variations of the keyword. Use it naturally. E.g.: "Marriage Busters is a group of divorce lawyers who serve residents in and around Atlanta, Georgia with assistance in terminating their marriage. Our divorce experts...blah blah blah.

And a few backlinks will help too!

Any advice for highly competitive niche to adjust KW research
because i can rank KW long tail but can t get to the main KW my OP is all legit struggling

sometimes others words fits in2 my perspective. Absolutely correct.

Then you'll get quality traffic, think about the landing page. Think about the content of that page and the kind of link you want to put to your nex tier or/and put a big button with your customer phone and cash every month dude!
