Where to start media buying?

Good to see you getting into media buying. $1k budget is good enough and I would suggest you to get basic knowledge of media buys. For that you can read "Wasted"'s post in this section or get a WSO about media buys , I hope you know how to get a WSO
About clickbank and CPA , I would suggest you to first try with CPA and when you get good at this you may try clickbank too.
P.S. :- Landing pages play an important role in every campaign.

I agree with what other guys are saying. Go with CPA first. I started recently with a Clickbank weight loss product. It's the most popular one. I got a CTR of .20%-.25% but no conversions. So I'll be focusing on CPA now as it's easier to get a conversion with.

Start with 100$ For next 2 Weeks. Tests your water..Learn by reading. after 2 Weeks invest 200$ per Week for next 2 Weeks. Total you spend will be around 600$ and next month Start playing Pro with 400$ per week Budget. But you have to read..Search for your answers. make Notes to remember them.

OP, understand you will probably spend the money and not get it back, that is part of the learning curve. But maybe you will do good from the start.
I agree with Shanna_Doll the best way to go about this in the beginning (cheapest route) is to contact website owners directly and get ad space that way. I personally do not have time to do this so I was thinking of hiring a VA to do this for me.
Sitescout is iffy to start with because they have some high traffic sites that will burn through your $1k faster than you would think. I haven't tried POF. I am also on BuySellAds, they may be cheaper in the short run but I have seen people complaining about the traffic they got - specifically it did not seem legit so be careful and understand how many displays you should be running for your spend.

To be honest, all of these ad networks are in the first place there to make money for themselves. I have heard many positive reviews about BSA and Sitescout but there are people who left negative comments as well, saying traffic is sometimes just dull. If you are just starting out (read: limited budget) + have some free time, it's best to contact owner directly as you know who you are dealing with. Once you know how to achieve good CTR and what conversion rate should look like, it's easy to switch That's how I'm starting orut. Unfortunately, many webmasters will give you a vague answer or are slow in responding, but at least you are sure you won't quickly burn out your budget.

That's true. If the game were so easy as to put up an advert for a cpa/cb product the traffic networks would not need to sell their traffic. The fact they are selling the traffic instead of monetizing it should be telling us something right up front.

So if BSA and SiteScout are not as great anymore, I'm guessing this brings us back to Direct Buys?

I did not mean to imply anything negative about SiteScout. Quite the opposite, I believe they are a stand-up, legit company and I have $400 in an account there right now. Just got through advertising on martha-stewart .com, which I probably could not do a direct buy on.
Back to your question. Yes it looks like direct buys are a good route. I am negotiating with a VA to do 20 hours worth of research and contacting websites to do a direct buy on. Interested to JV? $50 each gets us each 10 hours work. The buy is $100 total for 20 hours.

Sitescout would be a good place to start. However since most of the impressions are from RTB it will be hard to verify which ads are being shown to real users.
