Any ideas on how I can promote my baseball blog to make it more popular? What's a good way to attract people (besides guest blogging and paid advertising)?

I had soccer site and the most important thing is to write some interesting post or make some interesting video which will go viral. For example TOP 10 Funniest Moments in 2012 or TOP 10 Home-runs... Hope this was helpful

If you want to make your blog interesting and readable than better you update good quality of content. that content should be theme based and do smo of that blog.

Catchy titles. Exciting videos and articles. At the end of day, content holds the key. If you can produce exceptional content, then your automatically become popular. Obviously, you'd have to do the SEO thing, but focus on producing quality content.

How tough is it to get a sports blog on top of Digg or Stumble? How many votes would I normally need?

Social, man! Go sign up on a hundred sports forums and FB groups, have exciting content and syndicate it all across. You're sure to get the traffic you deserve :) All the best!

I understand about the need for quality content, but if nobody is seeing it, it won't spread. There has to be a boost to start the project.

Get a star to endorse your blog or ask to get an exclusive interview. Sometimes one gets lucky. People will throw links at you for long time.

This is really good advice, love it. I will reach out to all the people I can for interviews.

Have you tried networking with other baseball bloggers? If you want I can send you a link to a group of them that may let you join, you can also find a lot of bloggers following the same team who might swap links or guest posts. You could also try networking with bloggers for other teams in the same division as the one you follow (when your teams play each other you can link to each others stories), stuff like that will go a long way.

I tried that and it brought good traffic, but I'd like to make the blog much more popular with thousands of people visiting daily.

A large part of the traffic will depend on the team, some teams have multiple blogs getting that kind of traffic, others don't really have that kind of following. One thing you might try is to go for some exclusive content you can market. Research all your teams players in the bigs and the minors, get in touch with all the teams PR people and all the agents. Ask them for interviews, teams and players are getting more used to dealing with bloggers so if you are persistent you should get a few, and since the interviews are exclusive people will link to them. Good content helps but unique content that will get people linking to you should give you a boost.

Here's some tips from someone who had a pretty successful sports blog like 5 years back:
1) Someone said it earlier, but a Top 10, Top 5 anything. Comedy kills it though!
2) Do a post of other sports blogger posts for that day. That means going around to the different blogs (big and medium), and link to you favorite story of the day. Believe me, the medium guys and gals will see the traffic, and will start linking to yours eventually.
3) Take some time to write a really funny post. You don't even have to write something. Maybe like Top 10 Funny Basketball photos. Submit it to Sports Illustrated Hot Clicks.
4) Write about everything and anything. Harvin was traded? Be the first to write about it. And definitely make sure you have some SEO Title Tag and Description plugin. You will see traffic.
5) Try to get at least 3-4 articles a day. Some don't even have to be real articles, but something newsworthy. It also helps to write a bunch of different articles, and save it in the queue.
6) There will be times you will get burnt out. When that comes, work on something else. Maybe increase your twitter followers. It's also a great way to see how other sports bloggers are interacting with the world.

Things take time, but you everyone starts from nothing.

Forums. You can get a lot of traffic and also link juice from forums.

This is excellent. I've done a couple of these already and will do the rest. Thanks for taking the time!
