Are aged domains with no PR worth anything?

I have a domain from 2006, 2002, and 1999. They're .coms with words or combinations of words in the domain (as opposed to random characters or gibberish).

None of them have any links or PR, but they're also not penalized. They're just unused.

I'm not sure if I'm going to use them. Are they worth anything?

If they have backlinks maybe. Look through the backlinks if any and you can et a rough estimate of the PR the website will be. Also check the domain and page authority using tools like opensiteexplorer or mozcheck.com. Aged domains usually do not get sandboxed so you can blast away with links

I've made a small test in December with 2 domains both EMD however one was 2 years old and the other brand new and the 2 years old one ranked way faster and better then the brand new one. I've used the exact same method to rank both.

Well, if they've all been indexed since them (and haven't been dropped), they're going to be easier to work with coming out of the gate because they already have a lot of age on them. Your domains aren't necessarily worth anything, but if the previous factors are on the good side you should have a little easier time ranking them.

Pretty much yeah, unless it's very brandable or has a brand or company that might benefit from acquiring it.

Domain age matters in terms of history. If a site has been in good standing with solid content and old links, domain age matters. Look at it like a property for rent. An old unused apartment is probably more difficult to rent than a brand new one. I would go as far and say, a new domain will be better than an old, unused one.

So old domains with a history of old links that are still valid are worth more.

Old domains with no old links that still exist are not worth any more than a new domain which also has no existing links.

Interesting opportunity to do a quick case study! If you have some free time it would be cool if you would register a new domain very similar to an existing aged domain, throw up some content and build similar links and see how they rank together.

I don't think one would rank much higher than the other, unless the domain had preexisting links.

C) PR is not something you should look at, it has no value beyond your crawl rate. A site can be PR1 and produce more income than a PR5. PR is nothing to use to value something. Domainers don't really look at PR. Yes, having PR means it has some links coming in and might have some traffic.

Has the domain been parked? Has the domain been with no dns? Depending what you are trying to do is what information you need to look at. If you want to develop the domain then looking at preexisting links can help you determine if that is valuable or not. But if you selling domains there is another set of data you need to look at. You can sell domains thinking as an SEO guy.

Great notes. 123.com, 123.net and 123.org or domains like 3m.com, or 5m.com .net and .org are worth millions. I actually asked a few owners for some NNN.com and they responded with huge figures.

Is it only a drop if it goes through a period where no one owns it (ie. the created date resets)? In other words, if I registered a domain in 2003 and I owned it for 10 years and then I sell it to you tomorrow and you take over with your own registration info and your own hosting, is that a "drop"? A whois would show that the domain is still "created on" some day in 2003.

I tend to look at Domain Authority, Page Authority, MozRank and MozTrust more than PR.

Well a whois still says it was created in 1999. It's got a couple archive records for 2004 but that's it.

I just wondered if I could sell it based on its old creation date. It seems the answer is no (unless someone happened to want it for the name).

Just to be sure you can try asking for appraisal in domainkaforum, IF they have any value you can go ahead and sell them on that site too..
