Are there any ex-smokers here ? How did you quit? I really need to quit and tried gums/patches and nothing worked. :(

I've read and heard from other smokers, that weening yourself off is a great way. Say you smoke a pack a day, then smoke half a pack, then 6 or so the next day. Then try 3-4 per day for a week. Then drop down to 1-2 for 2 weeks. After those two weeks, do not smoke any. Hope this helps. It worked for someone else I know. Unless you're up for cold turkey quitting.

I have never smoked, but I know many ex-smokers, including my late grandfather. According to them, all you need is a ton of sheer willpower and maybe some motivation (like, I don't want to die early in lung cancer :) ). Gums and patches are like magical pills in the weight loss industry... People buy them because they expect they do the hard work for them. Some pills MAY help, but in the end its you and you alone who can reach the goal you set for yourself. Just quit smoking. It will be a living hell at first (well, according to the ex-smokers I know) but then it will get easyer day by day, and eventually you will not need it anymore. If its too hard, you can try reducing the number of cigars you smoke per day, gradually decreasing the amount every week or so. Just have to find out what works for you. Good luck!

Weaning myself off was the way I killed a 30 a day habit. If you can say to yourself I wont smoke in the car anymore and then stick to that. Once that becomes no problem then move onto the house, the workplace etc.

I found the nicorette inhaler a handy little thing--electronic cig might work for you.

Most important thing is never feel bad about having a cigarette. If you go three days without a cigarette and then in a moment of weakness you spark up, thats fine it doesnt mean you have failed just put it down as a glitch and keep on giving up.

For me personally what helped me the most was running! Everytime I wanted to smoke a cigarette I went out running like a mainiac... once I was completly out of breath my desire to smoke was gone - for as I knew that my lack of condition at that time was due to the black stuff in my lungs...

Keep in mind that whats most important are the first three weeks after. If you manage to pass these three weeks without smoking you wil have gotten rid of the "physical" addiction for sure. All thats left for you is to resist your "psychic" addiction: like the urge to hold something within you fingers or to have something in you mouth - I suppressed these urges with food like pretzel sticks or liquorice, and holding stuff like pencils, (working), or just keeping my hands in my pockets...

Motivate yourself! Start something like a rite: When I quitted everyday as soon as i woke up i kept on repeating a Phrase like a mantra - "Only for today I wont smoke"

hope I could help you a little... best of luck

PS: Let me know when you succeed!!!

cheers olystyle

Sheer will power is needed to quit. If you have enough of it you can easily go cold turkey without the need of patches/gums.

Good luck.

All you need to succeed is willpower!
Seriously, think of all the benefits you can gain from not smoking. Think about how your body looks from the inside... Trust me, it is not worth it in the long run! Smoking kills!

Just go and watch videos on YouTube about smoking and what it does to human health. If that does not help, you can read books to help you quit smoking as well.

I have had many friends who were chain-smokers. I volunteered to ensure that they quit smoking. Actually, smokers have to be dealt at a subconscious level. Following are few techniques I used to help my friends to quit smoking:

1) Public Oath: I asked them to take an oath publicly that they would reduce the number of cigarettes smoked daily. Once they had taken an oath publicly, then there was a guilt factor involved if they smoked front of those they took oath. This meant that now they would only smoke when they are alone.

2) Promise to their Loved ones: I made them give a word to their loved ones that they would not smoke. Ones you're giving a word to your loved ones, then you're emotionally liable to avoid smoking. This worked fairly well, but in some cases, they just gave in to the temptation.

3) Gifts/Rewards: I am pretty mad guy. Once I decide to get something done, then I stretch myself until I achieve my goal. There were couple of guys who used to always smoke when they were alone, so I decided to start a competition. Those able to control the temptation would get a party from my end. I used to spend my pocket money on the party, but it was worth it because I helped 4 out of 6 guys to quit smoking.

Friend, you can do this on your own. Use the above mentioned steps and I am sure you'll able to quit smoking. Actually, I would recommend you to start a journal. Start writing the thoughts coming into your mind when you want to smoke and also note how many times you were able to suppress the thought. It's a gradual process. You can't quit smoking instantly. IF you're a chain smoker, then you might take months, but if you smoke say 4-5 cigarettes a day, then it would be fairly easier for you to quit smoking. Channel your thoughts towards explaining yourself why you need to avoid smoking. Once you're able to feed into your subconscious that it's bad to smoke, then you can deal with this problem quite easily.

Cheers :)

Everytime you find yourself wanting to smoke do something else, replace the habit with something different.

This would be a way to commit to it entirely. Nice job. + 7 rep for that.

I'm in the midst of quitting. For about two months I was only having maybe 5 cigs a day to prepare my body for the change. I also took up walking and now walk three miles a day. Two days ago I went cold turkey and thought I was going to die. I did not sleep all night. Finally by 11am yesterday I had to get cigs. Some people can go cold turkey but I can't. Weaning is best for me.

Hey man. As everyone else said, you need to want to change yourself. I used to be addicted to every single drug you could imagine, making my overall addiction a spiraling disaster. I'm on my iPhone so I can't really explain to you what all I want to tell you, but I think it'll be enough.

You need to want to change YOURSELF. If you don't want to change your daily habits, you simply won't. It's kind of like trying to lose weight. If you don't see a reasonable cause for concern, you obviously wouldn't go to the gym. Don't do it for other people. Perhaps people will encourage you to stop, but that will eventually have to turn into your own personal beliefs.

I have been clean for over 4 years now, I stopped when I was 15 years old - you can too.

(By the way, I'm now straight edge so me being clean includes everything in which can be substance abused.)

I went from 3 packs a day of Marlboro's to zero overnight. You just need to do it, there is no try. Get some gum(chewing) and blow bubbles! Much easier than quitting cocaine and reefer was! Now the wife smokes, i still am never even tempted and its only been about 10 years!

This I always find the most interesting.. A lot of people do it. The fact that you cant sleep, feel like you are going to die is BECAUSE OF THE CIGARETTES. It is because you have put that shit in your system. But instead of saying, wauw this is what cigarettes do to me, I will stay off of them forever, you decide to smoke some more to get rid of the symptoms.. Such a twisted way of thinking imho

I quit 2 years ago last week after smoking a pack a day for 40 years.... yeah I know that makes me one of the "senior" guys around here.

The first step I took was to slowly reduce it down to 5 to 6 smokes a day. I kept it like that for about a month. That part was fairly easy. It just took a little discipline to plan out when to have them. Part of that was breaking up routines. If you sit down at your desk and smoke then stop that immediately. Get up and walk outside to have your smoke. You want to start to break the triggers... the routines that you associate with smoking.

Once I got past the 5 or 6 a day I knew it was time to finish it off cold turkey. I got up one morning and said today is the day. It was absolute hell for the first couple of days. I was incredibly sick. One of the worst experiences of my life... but I came through it. Once I beat those first couple of day I knew I could finish it off. I bought tons of gum and candies and everytime I had the urge I'd chew some gum or eat a candy. That probably lasted about 3 weeks. The urges keep going for quite awhile. Weeks and months. I still felt the urge to smoke at certain times. Sitting down and having a drink... environments and situations where you smoked thousands of times. Eventually this does start to diminish. I probably haven't experienced any of those in 6 months now and couldn't imagine smoking again. It's not easy but you can do it.

Well I havent had a cigarette for a week now and this is how im doing it. Im wearing a nicotine replacement patch on my arm, which does take a way most of the urge, but I also have one of those electronic cigarette. If I get a strong urge, I just have a go on the ecig. So far everything is going great, next thing to do is drop down the strength of the patch, and then hopefully quit.

Due to Allen Carr this is not a good way, since you focus more on cigarettes and therefore they gain more value in your perception.
I am smoking almost 20 years now and tried every "helper". Nothing worked, since the only way is mental power and a strong will. It is the same like the get rich quick things, the only thing that works is a strong will and endurance.

Certain methods work for certain people considering no one person is the same. However, the method I proposed is a good one because it helped a few people I know reach their goal of not smoking. The key is to keep at it, keep smoking less and less, and then understand your end goal is to not smoke them at all. The idea behind weening is so that you avoid getting sick, like when you quit cold turkey.

Electronic cigarettes, best cessation device ever created. My girlfriend and I quit 6 months ago, and my friend too (he was a 2 packs a day smoker for 34 years, was literally dying and probably would have died soon)

grab an ego battery from litecigusa and a charger
15 pack of XL resurrector 1.7 ohm cartomizers from crystalclearvaping
e-juice from heathersheavenlyvapes or rawrvapor
pick out a drip tip from any of those sites

and enjoy the easiest most enjoyable way to quit :)

You get a throat hit like a real cigarette, tons of vapor, the physical and mental addicition are both taken care of

There is no combustion, so you just take in nicotine and not the 6,000 carcinogens from smoking (zero carcinogens in nicotine vapor)

Never stink, get your taste buds/smell back in a couple weeks, puff inside your house at your office, can breathe 100 times better, when you wake up, your mouth doesn't feel like a herd of elephants slept inside it

When you start using the vapor, i suggest still smoking for like 5 days just smoke a lot less.. try and see how long you can go once you get used to it, and then plan a day you're going to say goodbye to cigarettes once you are familiar and comfortable with the vapor device. Anyone who says "just quit cold turkey it just takes willpower" has never been a smoker lol.

Good luck if you have any questions on this stuff let me know.
