Earning through hubpages and squidoo ?

Depends on what you mean by 'earn' through them...
I know several people with hundreds and hundreds of top-ranked lenses that have taken years to build/develop and they make $300-400 per month from profit sharing and the inbuilt monetization. If you think that's a good ROI; then go for it. In my eyes that's hobby money; great if its something you're passionate about, but useless commercially.
On the other hand, I have 10,000+ of each as 1st tier buffer sites.

I look at hubpages and squidoo as a first tier link that I backlink to push juice to my main site.
As jascoken said, it's going to take a very long time to make a decent dollar from those, unless you're lucky

Speaking on Squidoo.
Earnings are delayed because they basically get double verified so don't expect the money to come in fast.
They can be good if you like writing and making quality content on a lot of different subjects.
If you are really good with building tiers and automated backlinking they aren't so great because when you succeed with that you are going to run into the manual reviews (they get triggered fast by community input)
If you mostly write about 1 subject or niche it is probably better to build up your personal domain as a long term plan but if you write on many different niches building all those domains it can be better to profit share.
The domains are established and this makes it possible to have a really succesful page much faster then on your own domain. However the earnings are delayed.
I don't see how they are great for tier 1's because as new pages are created the lowest quality ones are pushed into no-index. They would have to be of pretty good quality to stay in.
In my 3rd month there I made $300+ but with the delays that's only going to be in my bank account by the 5th month.

Mostly these profit sharing sites take more time to earn, Unless you rank the pages or lenses quickly. IT is tough to see real money.
Slightly related... can anyone speak on the reason squidoo would outrank my website? A squidoo article is ranking #1 for a keyword that I am trying to rank for. I have already created much more content, purchases seo packages, etc. Do you think that it is just a matter of time?

I actually had a question similar to the orginal poster's...
I was planning on writing some articles about hobbies of mine. They're rather competitive topics, but I'm very passionate about these topics and have a lot of expertise to offer. So I thought I'd use HubPages and Squidoo as sort of a testing ground to see if people like my content (and maybe throw in an Amazon affiliate link where appropriate) If these pages do well, I would buy a domain and start doing SEO.
Does this sound like a good strategy?

I have been thinking about these.
The great thing about Squidoo and Hubpages is that the domain has lots of authorty from the get-go. What you can do, is you can use these as micro-niche sites. So if there is a topic that has a good adsense return, then instead of having to build a 20+ page site to buffer again Google, you could instead set up a page on Squidoo. Unlike your website, you don't have to constantly add new content to it to keep it up there and secure against rankings. Your squidoo/hubpage will rank quickly and need less backlinking. You can also take advantage of internal traffic.
... on the other hand, adsense doesn't usually earn you much money; and you can't sell you hubpage/squidoo page. Like, if you get a website making $20 a month, you can sell that website for $200. But you can never sell your squidoo/hubpage. So you're only ever going to get your adsense money; you can never cash out.
That said, I'm actually considering experimenting with Squidoo myself. The ease of ranking means that it could be the way forward for MNS's and I've got a great niche to do it in but you have no control of the theme so CTR could suck

I got started on hubpages and was able to make a four figure income within a few months. They don't perform well these days because they never fully recovered from Panda and now unpublish hubs with overly aggressive link building.
Squidoo is a much better option now for a whole slew of reasons.
-Their moderation is good enough to keep the site high quality but not so obnoxious as to impede the normal flow of work.
-They've managed well through all of the recent updates.
-They don't give you a subdomain like hubpages. Giving you a subdomain is akin to starting a new domain and it takes away all of the authority that working on those sites gives.
-They are more flexible with what you can do with their layout and modules.
To succeed, you need keyword research, content Google likes, a set up that converts, and lots of good backlinks. Skipping any of these will make your work harder and less profitable. Saying you can only make a hobby income from web 2.0 sites is short sighted. In my experience, a good web 2.0 is more stable than my own sites because it is less vulnerable to Google updates.
Although I usually get shot down for telling people this, I think going with web 2.0s is a solid strategy and it is one that I still employ heavily.

LBrown; do you have any tips for a setup that "converts"? I like Squidoo better than Hubpages for multiple reasons; in particular Squidoo just seems to have a much more active and involved community, and that will help buffer it against updates as well. People use Squidoo for more than just making money.

I use it primarily for Amazon. I use a small picture in the intro module then a big picture module right below it. I make the big picture a clickable link to Amazon (with my affiliate id) and I make the image like one of these. Making the picture in the intro small allows the big picture to be above the fold, at least partly. I don't put Amazon and ebay modules below this but fill the rest with text, videos, pics, polls, guestbooks, etc.
