How long till Google single handedly destroys the internet?

I have sites that used to rank 1 in google and bing until the last two updates finished them off.
Theyre still #1 in bing though and im deffinitly seeing a slow rise in traffic from there so maybe there is a change coming?

Someone mentioned duckduckgo but I think they are a long way off the same level yet. Where google are now it will take a big company with very deep pockets to overturn them. Shame "bing" is such a crap name.

I don't think that Google will have "Pay to Play" -type of searches anytime soon, at least not on all terms. Sure, for highly commercial terms like "Buy TV" or "buy shoes online" it might happen... but there are SO many terms that are not commercial (at all) and it is difficult to turn those in to significant profit.

I wouldn't be surprised though if G would switch their business model to blackmailing users: "Pay us a monthly fee of XX dollars or we will make your search history and Youtube viewing habits public. Remember that these are connected to your Gmail account and thus to your real name (and phone number etc)". :D Just a change in TOS and they are all set...

Nobody is more important then the whole internet for starters, not even google and here is where they went wrong.

Ofcourse its neccesary for a company to search for new adventures and growth but they are thinking now they are the internet police or something.

They were a searchengine and now they are taking a picture behind me when i take a leak in the street ffs.

Ofcourse some new things are cool but come on.

They never can stop us, and they are now filling up the whole first page above the fold with paid ads n stuff for their cold hard cash.

I will always make my living from the internet.

With or without G.

"Don't be evil" FUCK YEAH!

duckduckgo's main problem is that fucking stupid name - didn't they get an opinion from anyone with any background in marketing there?

Their results aren't great either but if Google were to go south, they would be an example of an alternative. I also like that you can just keep scrolling down on their site without having to go from page to page.

I think some are forgetting who the majority is that uses searches..

I don't normally click paid ads for multiple reasons.. none of which the normal ordinary consumer has knowledge of. they probably don't even realize someone has paid for a link they're clicking on to show there.. and even if they did.. they don't really think about it.. they just click.

for this reason.. I think the normal person is who controls the search engines really.. at least for our purposes to make money from them. If there is a better search engine out there.. and it gave you the exact result and information you needed without even having to click on a search result.. it just took you to the right page you needed at that moment. if a couple celebs were marketing a different search engine.. which one do you think a normal person is going to use?

You would think we're in a different generation where most all have computer skills.. and don't get me wrong.. that has changed the way we do marketing now.. but there's still a lot of people that just don't have all of the knowledge.. so I believe the media will continue to control what the majority of people use on the internet.

With the Bing/Yahoo alliance and the tight integration of Bing now in Windows 8, Xbox and Surface you are going to gradually see Bing take this over. Google has already lost market share over the last 2 years and this will continue. What kind of business model would ever tell you to kill over 100k adwords accounts because they didn't meet their quality, consider how much they lost from IM people just by this move. They don't make much on the Android platform or their other products so search and ads is all they have. All this compared to MS that can invest however much they want into Bing because of leverage from all their other products. Google has shit search results now as to what they used to be before all of these fucking algorithm changes and more & more myself and people I know are using Bing. FUCK GOOGLE!

You guys who state that the only way to knock Google off the top spot is via a big company with lots of money are missing the whole essence of what the internet is.

It's all about userbility. Google is the search overlord, the queen bee, not because she is evil, but because she is clean, quick and easy to use.

I argue that the decline of Google (if an event should ever occur) would come from internal problems, not an external threat.

Let's look at a few case studies:

#1 Yahoo! The classic example of failure and lack of self-indentity. Back in the day Yahoo! was as Google is today. What happened? It's site became loaded with SHIT, too many links and offshoots, and became overcrowed. Google tried to launch a similiar style homepage (myGoogle or some shit - which they are now cancelling. Why? Because people want a search engine not a fucking portal)
Anyway, Yahoo was a mess. Google stepped in...

#2 Myspace. The epitome of absolute failure. You newfags may not remember, but pre-2006 Myspace was the social media god. Like Yahoo! Myspace made the failure to clearly identify itself of what it IS. It attempted to become a portal and as a consequence the site became crowded, unresponsive and buggy. Myspace was a mess. Facebook stepped...

Both Yahoo! and Myspace were been perceived as invincible back in the day. So, behind all this gibberish, what am I trying to say? Firstly: behind all this multi-billion dollar shit we are still only looking at some HTML. A webpage. Nothing more, nothing less. It takes a fraction of a second to turn it off.

People can and do move on if poor userbility becomes an issue. If they skew their natural search results to the extent that it's loaded with ads (I believe they in danger of heading this way) people will move away to something simple, clean and userfriendly. But a demise isn't definite. The decline however would be slow and limited, especially now that Android has been taken up with open arms.

Just my views. :)

Love them or hate them, google has done wonders for the Internet, if I could not use google for 24 hours I would miss it big time, it's the most powerful way to search the Internet.

If someone can do it better, great, but google are pretty good.

Sure I hate the fact that google brought out an update and my main site for cut in quarters, but that's the name of the game.

Who wants an easy life ?

I dont even know why google is so popular nowdays with all the things they do to webmasters :P lol.

Bing, be simpler than google and get rid of your pics, be faster and provide best serp and people will love you! :D

People also can't ignore the fact the next Mac OS is going to have Siri built in and as it increases it's abilities it will become more like an engine. What happens when you can simply speak what you want and the results are spoken back or displayed on your screen? What if Apple turned on the feature in iTunes with the 300M or so users think how that could change the landscape overnight. We are getting closer and closer to being like Star Trek and Voice Recognition and AI. That is our final frontier.

I disagree. I think bing have actually managed to differentiate themselves from google and what they offer is a bit different - why have they done this?

Simple; they can't compete directly with google and they know it.

TBH I think google would have learnt from the past mistake of others. They will not shoot themselves in the foot and jeopardise userbility. They must have some kind of qualifying system in place to make products or whatever relevant to the user's search.

With regards to pushing organic search results lower down the fold. This of course has a massive impact from our perspective. Even if we manage to hit the top spot for product related searches, the number of clicks will only be a fraction of what it was. They don't need to keep us happy. It's all about the shareholders.

It doesn't matter who the top SE will be in the future, or however good their intentions were, they will eventually do the same. This is capitalism at work.

Nothing will change unless society does.

I completely agree. They are already so powerful that one day soon they will try and make money off of anything that can get thier hands on. I mean look at them. They are not only everywhere but every site and app we use they have created a system to use it though them also.

Nothing is safe

Uhm, thanks for the reviving comment, sir.
