Forget the various algo updates that have put a lot of webmasters out of commission. Forget the constant influx of misinformation and lies. How long do you think it is going to be before Google either ruins the internet or screws themselves out of their current position as the most popular SE in the world?

What makes me think that this may happen isn't the fact that they are constantly putting out new alogs that are, in my opinion, doing more harm to the SERPs than good but because they have semi-recently changed their shopping results to pay to play. This means if you want to be listed in Google Shopping, you will have to pay. Want to search for tobacco or firearm products using Google product search... you can't because they it now follows the same code of conduct that Adwords does.

How long until the first page of results on the SERPs becomes pay to play?

Most of us wold notice this in an instant and move on, but many people are not as savvy when it comes to search results as we are. Am I being paranoid or is this something that is bound to happen? If it does, do you think that Google will be essentially shooting themselves in the foot or will the single handedly destroy the internet as we know it?

What do you guys think?

You have got some points over there. Some things have to be done ASAP.

They'll keep destroying stuff until Chuck Norris gets angry enough and targets them.

It will definitely come down to "Pay to Play". They're probably just going to get greedier.

I just can't wait, if ever, for Bing to be a serious rival for them :D

It is not the future to pay for location in what should be organic search results. If they do this, there simply will be another to fill the void, as Google did to Yahoo when Yahoo began losing its marbles.

Google: Do No Evil. Paid Inclusion is "No Longer Deemed Evil" so...

If it happens, which it is pretty likely considering Google has not developed anything substantial in years and must be nearly desperate of ways to monetize their primary business, it will be laughably pathetic and a sign of a fallen empire. I don't care about fiber or phones, they are a search engine, and it's almost like they've given up.

Do you have some kind of objection with paying for things? So long as the end user gets relevant information I'm pretty sure they couldn't give a shit where you're located, be that the sponsored listings or the organic area. It's people from this very forum who were destroying search with your thin websites and your crappy content to farm some Adsense clicks. You only have yourselves to blame for this.

You try and abuse Google's technology - and then start crying when they patch the exploits you found and change the game. Talk about hypocritical.

It was Google's game plan from the start to herd all small internet marketers, white or black hat, into paid ads, using free organic results as a loss leader, and to make the entire web dependent on it or Big Inc. sites. BH gaming was not the reason, it has been the relief valve of the market fighting back at Google's attempts to monopolize SEO and PPC into perpetuity, while steering the market to the latter. BH sites have been hit by the algo changes, along with WH sites, sites with Adsense, sites without Adsense, sites also using PPC, etc. Google has been shown to be an equal opportunity destroyer of small IM sites, keeping them at bay so the big boys can rule the top rankings.

I'm not crying about algo updates. Any sites that I had that were thin that got smacked doesn't bother me at all. If you took the 2 minutes to read the OP you would understand this. The point is that a company will not longer provide relevant results, like they claim, when the SERPs are paid for. When you see ads on the side of the Google search results, are they in order or relevance or in order of who paid more? That is the problem with pay to play search results.

Another thing you may want to keep in mind is that it is Google's fault that their SE is being manipulated as they offer information that allow people to do so. Adwords KW search tool... they allow us to see page rank. I am sure that Yahoo, Bing and the like have a similar website ranking system to PR but they don't share it and therefor it is less likely to be manipulated.

They will soon enough if the government does'nt interfere , lol if they buy out facebook too , i guess nothing will be left for any new comers ,the future generation will then think internet was created and is only for google :P , who knows they might even replace the word "INTERNET" with "GOOGLE".

Just like a lot of other companies or nations that thought they were too big too fail they will fail. They think they can do whatever they want but auto-fellatio will explode in their face.

Google can't destroy the internet because Google does not own the internet.

The point is that a company will not longer provide relevant results, like they claim, when the SERPs are paid for

And then people will use someone 's engine who sees an opportunity to make money by doing search better - it 's called competition.

Let me pull that billion dollars to start a better search engine outta my ass real quick, brb.

Google will keep raping the little guys until they only have the Big Inc in their SERPS and nobody is using their search engine anymore because of this. While they may have over 80% marketshare, this can decline rapidly if they put their own greed over their users needs. I am sure that both Bing and Yahoo together with perhaps some other newcomer are more than happy to provide the service that google isn't anymore until they get big.

Sadly, there is no way around Google either imploding or somehow renewing their service to not benefit only those with the deepest pockets since the public simply couldnt care less for irrelevant, paid search results (my personal biased opinion).

Just because your ass can't do it, doesn't mean no one can do shit better that you :D
haha thats the response I give to anyone who says "I cant" ;) in all honesty though, they are monopolizing the internet but people have been finding ways to make money around the monopolizers for years. I think we need to start a rally group and fight club style destroy Google working offices in every city ;)

That would make sense since Google is a commercial enterprise with costs and shareholders to please. Google is only as good as its next visitor - consumers choose to monopolize Google. The door is wide open for anybody to do a better job than Google. Currently nobody is there yet, that's not to say that it'll never happen. It's all digital natural selection, if you were stupid enough to rely on one traffic source, well, the Internet is very good at weeding out those who shouldn't be in it - WH or BH.

Why can't you combine SEO with Paid, please tell me you can't see how these couldn't be combined? It wouldn't be much different form the current quality score algorithm for paid. It's not like SEO is free either, if your time is worth anything at all it's costing you money. Nothing costs nothing.

Google's whole idea is to reward websites who construct highly relevant content and present it to their audience. Then, they'll monetize on the side with paid results - because heck something's got to pay the bills. They offer information to help you better optimize your website, you make it out like everybody is a crook trying to screw over Google. Trust me, there's a lot of legitimate businesses out there who have no problems playing by the rules and keeping everything above board and ethical. They also reap the majority of the rewards too.

Yeah, organic search results and the traffic that comes from them will never go away. There's a reason why people still click the actual results even though ads are present. They want the content they're searching for, not what someone wants to sell them. If google's dumb enough to destroy that market, someone else will pick it up.

The amount of long tail keywords will never end as new products emerge. Do you really think anyone would have ever searched for squidoo or facebook ten years ago?

Just adapt and keep pressing on. It's a lesson I learned from what I thought would be the death of email marketing 10 years ago.

Google are not invincible - IMO they would just be dumb to open a door to Bing or some other company, I don't think we need to worry too much about that.

Simple and short : google is loosing its touch
just like facebook google gonna go down now!! people gonna move people gonna shift
its all cycle ... they trying to remove blackhat from cycle they die...
thats it
