[2012 Update] Step by Step Keyword Research Video Tutorial

Hey guys here is a quick tutorial on how to do keyword research using Scrapebox and Google's Free Keyword Tool.

2012 Updated version on how to do Keyword Research - Step by Step!


1) Open google's keyword tool.


2) Open new window and go to a web directory for ideas (I used "negotiation" for this video tutorial).


3) Type the keyword/niche you want to research, open advanced settings put 10k as max exact search and 300 as the minimum exact search. This is because the low hanging fruits tend to be between those metrics. (Make sure to put the setting on EXACT).


Take the results, sort them by the most searched, "save them/copy them" transfer them into notepad and remove the [ ] ... by typing CTRL H and the putting the two signs in 1 after the other and replace them with nothing.


4) Copy the list over to Scrapebox, open the add on called "google competition" - if you cant see it, then its because you have not installed it yet. Here is a link to their channel where you can see how to install it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyT3GtE74wU .


Don't use proxies (unless they are private) otherwise it will be VERY slow. Press "load from Scrapebox" and make sure to change the setting to "EXACT".


Press "START" and then export the data as .CSV and remove the keywords that have more than 100k - 200k results (if you are newbie).


5) You should now have a list of keywords that all have between 0 and 100k - 200k competition (depending on what you decided to keep). Copy those keywords to Google keyword tool again and press search... and now you have a list of keywords that have between 300 - 10k exact searches and no more than 200k competition.


Now go and build yourself a site around those keywords and make bank!

Great tutorial there.

But don't you think we can do a better analysis of the competition.
In my opinion, the number of intitle/inurl/results does not potray an accurate picture of the competition. The top 10 results do. We may have a keyword with 100k competition but the top 10 are really powerful sites and difficult to beat.And vice versa.

The number of results isn't an indicator of the competition.

The figure Google displays as "results" is actually just an extrapolation.

For example, try searching for "payday loans". It says there's 74,500,000 results, but if you scroll to the last page you'll see:-



"In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 802 already displayed."

So really there's only 802 results, however, even that figure of 802 is entirely irrelevant.

When doing keyword research and trying to determine the competition level of your niche all that you're interested in is what's on page 1, and to a lesser extent what's on page 2/3.

Competition analysis can actually yield so many different types of results. There's not really "easy", "medium" and "hard". You might have 3 incredibly strong sites at #1-#5, but the rest are pretty easy in which case you can probably get the bottom half of page 1, or you might have a whole bunch of moderately strong sites on page 1/2.

Unfortunately there's not really any 'easy' way to automatically determine competition from a keyword without a custom tool that looks at a whole variety of ranking factors. Something that uses the seomoz api for instance.

The best way for a newbie to do it is just check page 1 by hand. The good thing is if you're looking for low competition niches you can usually tell just by looking. If you see mostly videos, forum posts and sites that aren't strongly relevant then chances are you can rank with on-page seo + a few backlinks.
