OMG it's all changed - where to begin marketing??

Hi all, haven't been around in a while, building a business (well trying to lol), and I've just about got a site ready, a few more days will see it finished.

So it's time to think about online marketing, only trouble is so much has changed from the days I could write 20 articles and watch my traffic flood in, I'm a bit lost.

Reading similar threads on here isn't much help either as they are dated 2010 and 2011 time frames which really isn't going to be much help

I'm an artist by trade and will be painting people and animals onto canvas in oil, old fashioned I know, but they last forever and feel great to touch. So I'm in need of your infinite advice once again on how to start getting orders from the site.

Basic marketing should be first, all of the pages are meta'd up, but I need to do some more research into buying kw's first, literally just putting it all together so I can have something I can see.

What I'm looking for is some advice really, what you feel would be the best bet to get started, what services (if any) you recommend, and overall what returns I should aim for from my efforts (or my service provider lol).

I know you're all busy, and that nobody is going to hand over a secret formula that boosts me to the top spot overnight, I'm looking to build this business the right way and to not just get there but stay there

I thought the panda and penguin updates made many sites lose rank, don't really understand the changes as I've been away so long lol, but my understanding is that links, articles and satellite sites no longer work??

Doesn't that mean, no link backs (created anyway), articles are next to useless and that web2 profiles can no longer pass juice???

High PR backlinks + random href names.

If you're new to IM world, my suggestion is find a subniche you'd want to dive into, and hit it hard, master it. Once you've mastered it, take on another subniche, you'll be able to drive insane amounts of traffic to any site or offer once you have several subniches mastered. It's like turning on engines to drive traffic to wherever you need it.

Thats the best way to handle IM if you are a newbie. I suggest you try youtube. Its very easy and gets loads of traffic.

Googlebot is still a bot not human, Machines can be fast but they cant be smart...thus you can fool them always using your mind. And yeah there is nothing secret from which you can achieve overnight rankings, don't trust anyone saying things like this.

Thank's for the input guys, much appreciated. In fact I'm not new to IM just been out of it for a long time, facebook had just become 'the' place to market when I left lol, seems an age since then.

My main process was social media anyway, but that isn't as easy as it once was, facebook alone has made dramatic changes both to what you can do and what results you can get back from it.

My initial plan was to jump back in with the business' social profiles and pump them up to divert the flow of traffic around, however, that's much harder to do these days so I guess I'll be stuck pulling details from the profiles and running with a list.

Do we have any AdWords or FB advert pro's in here who can shine a light on the effectiveness and productivity of those avenue's these days?

Also, are we still looking for low comp KW's because there don't seem to be many left for 'buying' words let alone with medium to high traffic on an exact match. What's the process for that these days?

Low comp KW's are a start, but don't let competition scare you off. Just do it better than the other guy.

For oil paintings...is this something that people are actively searching for? Is organic traffic worth chasing? I would think for selling that type of service you would want to be active on social media, YouTube with videos of you doing your thing or talking about it or whatever, etc. I wouldn't just slap some videos up and buy views, but participate in the platform and basically go to where your customers are and engage them.

Also, what about Etsy?

And, if you are good at this oil painting thing, how about creating some products? A video training series, maybe some ebooks, and a membership website with forums where people can "Ask the master" ;-) Start building an authority site orthogonal to your service and be the authority on oil painting of animate objects and start building a list of potential buyers of your products in addition to your service.

Like color by numbers, but not that simple, maybe a series of them graduated as people advance there is less and less pre-outlined for them etc. So you could have Step 1 through Step 10, the 10 step program to oil painting mastery hehehe. Markup the canvas with outlines and notes around the sides etc. that guide the person. $49.95 a piece or buy all 10 for just $395 and save $100. Buyers of the training canvas get 1 month free access to the membership site for each canvas they buy.

You don't have to relearn much. Just build high quality niche relevant links. Do a quick search on the forum and you can find several discussions.

If you're an artist, I suggest reddit, stumbleupon, pinterest, facebook, and maybe twitter. Find relevant art websites to link to you.

You should look into leveraging your knowledge in writing articles or having articles written in art journals and etc....Just do your research on the trade associations, and, major magazines for your niche then try and dominate it.

not too much has changed. People have just gotten more advanced with certain techniques and have been scaling up. You can do the same things you used to do, you just have to find a way to do it faster and more efficiently

Sadly at the moment I'm doing the all too often heard of thing, working one job to fund my enterprise so I'm working about 15 hours a day right now and something like that would require dedication that I can't give right now. Marcink99: That was my first idea TBH, trouble is as mentioned above, I'm working far too much at the moment, but I will get into the swing sooner or later and get an information download.

VinBed: Yeah I was thinking along those lines too, just seeing if there was a 'faster' method to hit the ground running so to speak.

farfetchedmoney: Very good advice, I was so fixated on online I'd forgotten offline lol. I used to write for a magazine in the UK previously so that's a very good option. Thanks for the offer of help too, very much appreciated and I may take you up on that once I have a bit more solid foundation in the direction I choose.

Rojorab2: Yeah I can see that now, I suppose good outsourcing are the way forward once a certain and direct marketing plan has been chosen.
