Howdy Y'all ~~

I'm Texan Tigress. I'd like to thank the creator/s, the Mods, & the BHW 'family' for allowing me the privilege of becoming a part of your community. I am just in the learning stages about this field - but am knowledgeable in others. My husband is extremely tech savvy & let me know about this great group of people. (Thanks Tiger!!)

I'd just like to take a moment to thank all of those in freedom loving countries including my own US of A whom have or are in the Armed Forces for serving, for your sacrifices & for my freedoms! Let's face it - without those brave Heroes none of us would be able to use this internet for our own aspirations as freely as we can in the first dang place now would we? ;-)

I look forward to learning all that I can & to having the privilege of getting to know y'all.

:usa:

It's about time you joined us :D

I'm sure you will be a great contribution to the forum once you learn the ropes. But watch out for the new mod Oldsalt......... Oh wait, nevermind... lol j/k

Welcome to BHW!

Haha no you dont really offended me. Please dont think that. I was just feeling a bit "meh" about the "internet part".
But most of the people dont know anything about the history of the internet so I always like to clear things about that certain topic up a bit so excuse me for that :) .

I never said you should apologize for being american :D. That would be kind of racist and really stupid.
So dont worry :) . Just keep in mind that not everyone is sharing the same standards. I dont have anything against americans and I aplogize if it seemed like that. I have alot of awesome friends from all around in america (actually from all around the world ;) ) and I like every human being aslong as they dont proof me wrong.

So once again a warm welcome to BHW and have a nice and succesful time on here.

Kind regards,

~Black.Star~

BTW - she really does talk that way... mostly. ;)

and I have to say, I grew up in the north but have considered Florida to be my 'home' for a long time (where I lived before I joined the Navy) - but after visiting Texas, I found it to be alot like Florida, but with much nicer people. "The Friendly State" really is more than just a motto there.

We are very seriously considering making our next move to Tx :)

Be sure to put the Texas Hill Country on your list of possibilities. It's beautiful here. Welcome.

You do have a point, am sure she meant no harm, she just excited to become a bhw family.

OldSalt isn't as old as I thought he'd be!

In truth I do just picture him as his avatar lol.

I agree 100%! His avatar matches the name perfect. Actually by looking at the real pic, I feel kinda let down. He looks nowhere close to being old! Lol.

On a side note.... Who thinks of me as my avatar? Wow that gave me an idea. "1 year old girl journey thread" lol

Oh... two accounts from one IP? Someone's gonna get reported to mods ;)
Kidding.

Welcome aboard, TexanTigress. Feel free to hit me up whenever you need help with anything. OldSalt is a friend of mine.

All the best.

You might want to search on wikipedia for a detailed history/timeline of the net.

However, one thing I can tell you for sure, soldiers didnt built the internet, they also are not securing the internet and wars dont make the net more stable (lol).
I know that it was in the early phase a military project meant to provide a safe and most importantly independent communication network in case of a military strike.
Even tho it was sponsored by the military didnt mean that soldiers/militairs developed it. We can thank people from early network technology companys and universities like the MIT for that. As soon as it got dropped by the military the net became a tool for universities and scientistic communication and soon after that reached the public.

With kind regards,

I remember working on packet switched networking and DOS 3.1 in 1974-77 at Randolph Air Force Base, while working with Burroughs and Sperry Univac engineers, as an enlisted man, learning to push data between the AF Personnel center and Cheyene Mountian for NORAD over telephone wires at a 1200 baud rate, so I will have to differ with your version of the facts. That is 1200 bits a second, not kilobits, BTW.

And also BTY the Internet came about when the US DOD developed a network that could exist with a central computer controlling it, so that in case of a nuclear strike, the communications couldn't be taken out with a few strikes. The first networks came about in the late 60's and ARPAnet was the result

In the late 70's, defense contractors and a few universities were allowed to connect. This was the first non military use of what was to become part of the internet.

In addition to doing their project work, the participants started using the method to work on their own projects and just to communicate ideas back and forth. (You should heard the ass chewing I got for flirting with a cute redhead in CM over the network, apparently they did not want "Unofficial" communications showing up in the logs, I damn near got an Article 15 over that) This caused the DOD to split APANet in to two networks, MILNET and ARPANet.

By the late 80's there was so much traffic on ARPAnet that was civilian in nature that the National Science Foundation (A US Entity) build a communication backbone to provide bandwidth intensive communications to all the people connecting to ARPANet and MILNET. At the same time they also started funding networks at private institutions and universities and add them to their network. All over the world this example was soon followed, and this is the first point where a real civilian influence could have taken place. But the Internet had already been built. It was just at this time, the NSF's network did not allow for any comercial uses.

Not until 1991, when a bunch of greedy Capitalists, The Commercial Internet Exchange (CIX)was established as a way to sell data from online databases, did a network come about that did not have restrictive use policies. It was built on the network protocols, backnbone, and best practices of ARAPNet.,and NSFnet.

These entities gradually morphed into the Internet, but civilian interaction did not occur until the packet switched network model had been built and tested, implemented, and used for nearly a decade by the US DOD.

---> Sldebo, I have got to get 15 post somehow lol !! I just tried to send you a message but alas I do not have 15 posts. Btw.. LOVE LOVE LOVE the Hill Country!! :-D

Ok, as much as I loved serving my country for 20+ years in the Navy, let's not turn this into a flag waving battle ok? We are all proud of our countries and what they have accomplished. I am also very proud of many other countries and what THEY have accomplished at many times throughout time.

As far as my age, I used to say that it was love of a good woman that kept me looking fairly young for my age (48) - but... well... after my first marriage ended, I found a better woman who makes me feel younger than I have in years. (YES, it is my Tigress... lol)

Now, let's not turn any of this into a debate over who invented what, when or which country is better, k?

Thank you,
OldSalt

Awwwwww Shucks OldSalt aka Tiger - you sure still know how to make your Tigress blush
