Penguin: Anyone else feel like givng up?

Scritty-I like alot of your posts...but gotta call you out on this one-
what does good content have to do with seo?
Link diversity, anchors etc..now THAT makes sense. Google machines cannot determine GOOD content...just uniqueness.

Don't give up!

Here's the pattern, you should know this by now: Google makes a change, google makes another change, Google makes another change.... and so on.

You gotta roll with the punches. Get a new domain, port all your content over to it, 301 all the old pages to the new ones so you don't get dupe penalties.

If the penalty transfers, then new domain, port the content, and start from the beginning. If your site made money once, it will do again. Granted, this is tough with ecommerce where you have a brand, but exisitng customers will be sent via the 301 anyway.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure what you meant by the last part, as if the penalty was transferred to the 301, then it probably wouldn't be a good idea to start again on a new domain and 301ing the old domain in case it happens again?

raticals75: I'm in the baby market and unfortunately the forums in this market don't allow any 'selling'. This means I can't refer to my website on the forum because it is a site where I can make profit. I can't think how to get around that.

Hi stacey,
You can try giving away a free ebooks or informative website to members once you make yourself a little known. Tell members to pm you there email adress and if you are genuine and informative you now have a list to send your offers or websites to. Might think of some more ideas. Pm me your Skype and it would be easier to communicate. Also if you want we can post them on bhw for everyone to learn from.

It can be hard to let go of a niche, but if you are in high competition niches at the moment which take forever to rank in, I would not bother. I always stick to low comp / high paying niches.

UNiqueness is just the start of it. You might get "Unique and nothing else" indexed, but if you want to rank you need to go a lot further than that these days.
Google algo doesn't just check uniqueness though, it checks word density and since 2011 Panda it's widely beleived to check context.
In other words if an article seems to be on a particular topic, there are words and phrases it would expect to be included. It's quite subtle, not every word need to be included in every article, but if none of the expected words are in there, it registers it as spam or none contextual

So if you wrote an article about "Dog Training"

It might expect to see the words "puppy", "bitch", "kennel" "lead" "leash" "sit" "obedience" etc.

None or too few of these context words and Google will assume the written work lacks context..Too many of course and your over optimizing. It's a thin line.

Then it does a dictionary check. Supposed to be English? If it can't understand more than a certain percantage of words...again it's marked down.
It checks stuff even down to the average length of characters per word. Check out PartyNeons post from about a month ago. Shows how detailed Google checks your articles without ever understanding them it learns a lot more than people realise.

With these (and other checks) Google doesn't "know" anything. It doesn't actually analyse your prose, but it has a shrewd idea whether your writing bollocks or not.
Quality content isn't just about uniqueness, it needs to be consistent in language, contextual, no words overused, have expected average word length and other criteria.
Wish it was just about uniqueness, then we could just stick a tape recored on in the living room at tea time, and "speech to text" the family conversation and turn it into 20 articles every day.
Google doesn't make life that simple.

Definitely DO NOT GIVE UP!

I know its hard, but don't abandon the domain. There are lots of people that are making small tweaks and are bouncing right back. Have you tried cleaning up any of your link profile yet? Do you have a lot of duplicate content on site?

Automation is absolutely key after Penguin

Bad automation is the very worst thing you can do.

Don't want to sound smug, but all but one of my sites has absolutely thrived after the Penguin update, and I automate EVERYTHING
I just do it in a way that is almost the exact opposite of the crappy ways I see here and that probably 90% of SEO guys use

When you buy a service..don't kid yourself that it's not automation..9 out of 10 of then ARE AUTOMATING even if they say they aren't. The good ones are just doing it properly.

AA lists, crappy content, poor acceleration metrics, no deep linking, no platform diversity. That's so 2011

Good contnet on high PR high traffic websites across a large range of platforms with good diversity on terms of content and anchor text.

Works a charm. And no way could I do that without automation.
If you've uysed automation on your sites and they've failed..

THAT'S YOU, NOT THE TOOLS!
A BAD WORKMAN BLAMES ......

This.

Its not automation that sucks, its how 99% of people use it that sucks.

Instead of giving up, why not do a 301 redirect. I got hit by penguin and I coded a PHP redirect code and did 301 and all the sites came back to page one within a week. They have been there for 2 months now and didn't drop.

The problem with redirect is that someone people do it wrong. If you are doing it through cpanels and all that, the penalty will transfer but if you do it properly, you will regain your rankings.

If you are trying to clean up your site from garbage links and de-optimize your site hoping that will return your ranking, good luck because you will wait for years for that to happen.

Redirect is a fast way to get your ranking back.

Add more diversity and never give up. In the world of black hat and internet marketing, staying on top of algorithm updates is key. Look for more ways to drive traffic, focus less on building links if you are stuck. Good luck and NEVER give up!

I do e commerce as well and if you have one website than you are doomed to get hit eventually. Right now I have 7 and building 1-2 new e commerce stores each week. There is NO WAY you will ever be safe especially with one store. If you are doing this for fun than sure why not. But if you are doing this to support yourself, you must learn to ditch sites if need be and create new ones.

Don't give up just ditch that site and move on. The thing with SEO is you need to test and you can only test with tons of sites. Easy with shitty affiliate sites but e com stores are much more time and money intensive. Get with a system and replicate or yes, you should give up.

Don't give up. One the upside, you got to remember, someone has to be on first page.

Start Diversifying your traffic instead of relying on one source.

I decided to quit two of my website and build two new website in the same niche. Right now I only build links to related niches, Web2.0 sites, Article directories and link directories.
Don't give up, it's just a bump in the road to success.

i seriously want to know how do you do 301 redirect "properly"

Thanks :)

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all of the input. I've decided to keep the site running, but not spend all of my time on it. I'm going to spend a few hours a day on that site, and spend the other few hours each day creating new sites. I have tried affiliate marketing a couple of years ago, but never really got in to it and didn't give it time to profit. If anyone knows of any free information or videos which will help me to start up new affiliate sites, please let me know :) If I were to create an Amazon review site, is there a way I can show the customer reviews for the product on Amazon underneath my review page for that particular product?

Search for amazon review widgets for Wp and relative terms. There are tons of plugins and Wp themes that do just that incl. importing the customer testimonials as well.

Hi Typlo,

Would you mind selling your redirect method? I assume that you don't want to share it for free. I will contact on PM when I will have post count.

seoguy81, thanks, I wasn't aware that there are plugins which do this. That's good as it will make the process much easier.

Diversity is the key - anchors, platforms, social and so on.... I am ranking few sites with GSA and Scrapebox alone.

Here's something you might want to read up in regards to the next Penguin update

HTML:
http://www.seroundtable.com/google-penguin-refresh-wait-15497.html

I'm sure many blackhatters are waiting anxiously for the next Penguin Update, that's good. But we are not giving enough importance to the disavow-this-link tool, it will be a game changer. Imagine being able to bring back to life your sites and CTRL + Z any bad seo campaign, if it works like this, it will be great.
