How much do you charge for ad placement on your website?

I have a website with 2500 uv/month and 7000 pageviews/month and I would like to start offering ad placements to local companies since it's a local oriented website.

I am willing to offer them 3 add areas:

1. In the header between logo and menu, with a maximum size of 940 x 100 (width and height in pixels respectively). Not limited to the front page, meaning it would appear above every post.

2. Sidebar ad displaying on front page and all posts with the maximum dimensions 200 x 600.

3. Ad placement area below posts only with a maximum size of 650 x 250.

Would like to hear how much you would charge them and what do you base your calculations on.

normally for a make money online website that rank number 1 on G. charges ranges from $27 dollars to $300 monthly, depending on the placement of the advertisement on the site.

I tested a leaderboard adsense ad between logo and the menu for one month and made 5x the amount you mentioned. All visitors are targeted, so I am sure it has to be more than what adsense brings in.

Consider you place no more than 3 ads, charge them $300 to $500 for it. Just talk it out. Start by saying, we normally charge $500 for a spot and see his reaction and say your next sentence accordingly. If he is taken aback, just say"but we are running a special and would charge you$300 for it"

Also, a good idea would be to start charging low($100-200) for first few months and when they are hooked you can that was a special price for the few months and now its going to $500.

I charged a few people $800/year for a high traffic site banner. Traffic was network of sites, around 50k visits per month or something like that.

That's a valuable general idea, thank you! However, how much would you approximately charge for each ad spot based on the above dimensions and placement? I will need to make a rate card for the advertisement locations.

A good idea indeed, but for different circumstances. In this case the town is small and the business owners know each other quite well. It would take them a phone call to figure it out.

I sell some ad spots on my travel site, but not on the home page. for a 180 x 300 slot under the left menu I charge $60 per month (charged quarterly).

I'm not sure of the actual pages traffic and UV (off the top of my head), but the site gets approx 750 uniques a day.

However I didn't try to find this advertiser, they approached me and that figure was the first thing that came into my head, I could maybe of charged more, but ad's aren't really our thing.

For your traffic/niche, I would charge $250 a month for your biggest ad, $175/month for your side bar ad, and $125/month for your below content ad.

You should also consider making packages where they can subscribe for 3, 6 and even 12 months for a discounted monthly rate to lock them in long-term.

It is very important that you have a structured ad placement system setup for potential advertisers to see and think, "hey this looks like its working for others so I'm gonna give it a shot".

No problem.

If you know what you're doing you can find a nulled ad management script, have it setup and running as I described in just a few hours. Then when you go to these local offline meetings, you have something to show them. You could even use the good ole fashion sales pressure by saying you just added this automated ad management backend and can't believe how fast the ad spots are filling up and that you are on track to be sold out on ad spots within 2 months type of thing.

But if you're just looking to get $50 here and there then it obviously won't be worth the effort.
