Can't recommend any at this time. I was using Linkvana for building links to secondary social media sites to boost their link juice. Worked great for awhile and survived the initial Penguin update but got torched last month. I always considered Linkvana a step above the Linkvines, BMRs, etc. but as pointed out earlier it's just a matter of time before any public network gets hammered by G.

I never understood the fascination with blog networks, especially if you're trying to break into a high competition niche. If you're doing low competition niches then sure, it can be a nice boost but in the long run the only use it provides is diversification, that alone might be worth it provided that you don't try to build your own for that purpose like some of the gentlemen suggested here.
Point being, there are much easier and cheaper ways to get links of the same quality, if not even better and stronger for less money and less effort.

Building your own network is the best SEO decision anybody can make. It gives you control over your own links and control over powerful links. If for some reason your site gets penalized you "own" the links and can remove them. It is the only way to have true control in this crazy business.
Just read through a lot of bullshit on this thread. People recommending you to start your own network is like people recommending you to buy a car when you only need it for a ride for few days of the year. Unless you are planning to really drive it everyday for 5 years ahead then there's absolutely no plan in doing it.
Building an effective private blog network will cost you more than $10k to setup and will leave you with running costs of $10,000 - $15,000 per year. And that's just for 200-300 sites...of which you will have 50-80 sites with PR2+. Unless you have the capacity to utilize this investment, there's no point in going through all the headaches.
Not mentioning the time of setting up, configuring, buing domains etc and maintaining the sites.
I own a network of this size (which I believe is small-to-medium) and I do offer link building solutions in the form of packages. There are quite a few people that do on BHW and private blog networks are no mystery or whatsoever.
The only difference is that you are not likely to get a report ..on the blogs where your posts will be submitted.
This makes it a bit subjective and hard to understand what you are paying for. I have tested few networks and even built a special tool that analyses link report to see what their quality is and I often found out that most PBN owners are lying about the number of class-c IPs. (the tool is calle linkscore)
The most important thing when choosing the private blog network where you will be buying packages is to find one that actually does no more than 2-3 sites per class-C ip. This is the biggest expense from a PBN owner's perspective.

I believe this to be true as well as I previously overlooked this with pr1-pr6 sites I have but hosted on the same 2 servers I have my money sites hosted on. Different IP and DNS etc, but same host. I think G looks at this and devalues accordingly.

You can buy dropped domains and host on different free hosting services. I've done this, within a few days the site's PR is back and all is cool.

Let me put it in simple terms
1) Private networks are good
2) Cost depends on quality -- you can make it for hundreds .. you can make it for thousands...
My personal network costs me over 7k (just 35 odd domains !) and is still growing
3) Look at DA/PA for domains before building (obviously higher the DA/PA - higher the cost)
4) Use unique content
You will rank without doubt...

I agree with all this. Private blog networks are incredibly powerful and are still an important tool.

Most networks are pretty safe as it is common for a network owner to use seperate hosting, and private domains, or only use donated domains, taking a cut of the profits for running the network.
The only way a network will get caught is if the network interlinks all the domains among eachother or a manual review of a site leads the rater to mark it as a link farm.
the only time i've been caught is when i used to use ALN/BMR networks and they were huge as well as flawed. The new network from BMR is hpbacklinks.com and it is pretty damn good. As for the PR juice and rankings boost? There's nothing better than blog networks right now. The sites in the network are all "legit" so to speak, so they compare very well to real websites which would link out.
I don't know why there's so much fuss and debate over blog networks, it is pretty simple stuff and it goes without saying that they work incredibly well.
If you want to rank a site very quickly and very well, you buy links, that's just the truth of it. All these web 2.0s with spun content do work, but they're nothing compared to full sites pumping pagerank into your site.
