How do you guys build your sites?

I was reading the FatCatBlueprint yesterday, do you guys think this is still relevant today with all the panda, bear, chicken, cow updates from Google?

No, this the first time i want to build my own site. Wordpress is for blogging, correct?

You can use wordpress for almost anything. Review sites, portfolios, blogging etc. you just need to find the right themes.

its also user friendly and has lots of great plugins

wordpress has to be the easiest way for anyone to get a site up and running. just sign up with a host and install wordpress from cpanel. and then buy a theme that you like and install it.

this thread is really good, as I started my website today, I haven't joined adsense, any recommendations for me with adsense?

For large sites, with hundreds / thousands of pages, you will have to use a database driven content management system.

If you want a simple site with just a few pages, use html. But once you start getting dozens of pages, you will regret not going with a CMS to start with. So unless you know for a fact that you will never grow past a few pages (unlikey), go with a CMS. By going with a CMS to start with, you will be able to grow faster and easier then if you want with a basic HTML site. Using a good quality CMS to start with also allows you to plug add-ons like a forum or a picture gallery into it later.

Yes. Do NOT add adsense right away to a brand new site. Not only you will have less chance to get accepted but you will also show google that you clearly created this website not for user experience.

I did the same mistakes many months ago. I had only 10 visits per day and i was wondering why i dont have any clicks.

Prepare the website, get some traffic, dominate your niche and THEN monetize it.

If the website is just for presentation you can use html, but if you need larger website you need CMS. The problem with CMS's is that you need some basic php if you want to customize it, but you can use themes and you still be ok. My advice is to learn HTML, CSS and PHP if you to develop your own websites. Good luck.

Personally, i use Dreamweaver for small sites, it has basic templates, you can edit them to your needs or create your own templates to save time, plus learn a thing or 2 about HTML & CSS..

For more complicated projects, i find an open source script and play about with them until i get what i want.. since i am still learning PHP, MySQL etc.. i find it easier to learn this way.... and google has an answer for any question or problem you come across :)

Wordpress, Joomla, Durpal etc.. are good options

Use Wordpress, it is super easy to install.

HTML will take you forever and you can't expand easily, especially if you do not have experience.

We develop our own themes, and sometimes buy from a great resources for web developers, we can skype if you want help. take care!

Look Mate,
If you are new to this then see some basic tutorials to grab up some ideas. Its the only way you can enter the vast world of site making techniques.

Cheers!

Use wordpress mate. If your hosting has cpanel it'll be even easier to install with fantastico.

Ive never used Blogger, but I would assume that wordpress being what is used the most often, probably has the largest selection of plugins, especially for IMers, since Wordpress seems to be the most popular by far with IMers

Superiority by popularity. If everyone uses it it must be good, if no one uses it it must be bad... That's the usual logic. Also, wordpress has a dumbed down interface so anyone can use it and not fuck it up. Lastly, most people that choose WP are doing adsense/email or some other non-intensive marketing which doesn't require specialty.

Wordpress and Joomla is the best tool to create your own web site you can build most powerful website on wordpress. There is also have many SEO tools plugins in wordpress which help to do optimization of your site Wordpress is the best for creating site in one click.
