No, that's not why they don't stick.
If you redirect a bunch of domains that have a lot of backlinks to a site it will be hit sooner or later by google due to the 301 method.
A lot of long standing sites do not use the 301 method at all, in fact, or use it very sparringly.

The #3 site doesn't even have more than 80 links to it.... and almost none are bought.
