This guy is ranking 1 for something comp. no 301 redirects, how?

Just analysed it - he has a crap load of paid links everywhere. I wonder if it's worth the ROI.

Of course it's a good ROI, considering he gets $50-$100 per affiliate sign up.. Let's say he spent $1000 on links, he can recover that with 10-20 sales.
And since he is not ranking high only for the term I mentioned, he must be banking hard.

Unfortunately, they almost never last even 2 months though.

Depends,going slow it would stick because alot of big sites use 301's legitimately but these guys blast big and simply clone sites then repeat,it's all about making money and they seem to do that well.The reason they don't stick is because they remove the 301 to another domain.

No, that's not why they don't stick.
If you redirect a bunch of domains that have a lot of backlinks to a site it will be hit sooner or later by google due to the 301 method.
A lot of long standing sites do not use the 301 method at all, in fact, or use it very sparringly.

Another site in the top 5 for "best web hosting" does not use paid links at all or redirects either.

The #3 site doesn't even have more than 80 links to it.... and almost none are bought.

The #3 site doesn't even have more than 80 links to it.... and almost none are bought.

I used Traffic Travis to check out the competition, I didn't notice any unusual sites in the top places therefore I only picked that site.
I also don't really have the time to do thorough and deep checks.. I appreciate your insight guys.

penguin did some pretty stupid things... one of my sites ranked for "thank you" from a thank you message i posted on the blog section and i got xx.xxx number of visits / day for this keyword... lol!

cookie stuff the page with amazon and you will see big money from that thank you page..

I see your point,what I meant was use maybe 1 or 2 and go easy on the link pointing to the 301'd domains build up the links slowly.I understand a massive amount of links will hit a site eventually but if those links to the 301'd domain look natural I see no reason why it would cause an issue.
