Is there a web 2.0 penalty now?

So my site was ranking #26 with no backlinks done. I created a web 2.0 and wrote a unique article with a contextual backlink added. To my surprise, a few hours later, I dropped out of the ranks.
Anyone else experience this?!

That said, i do have my thoughts on web 2.0 properties badly done.

I would recommend to first vary your anchors, second vary the OBL, and publish articles with no OBL at all. (OBL = outbound links in case you ask)

I think, it's hard to decide with just 1 web 2.0 created. Recently I created about 30 web 2.0s all with unique content for one of my clients and the site gained ranks for a moderate keyword.

Hope, your ranks will come up again, since the site I was work also dropped and suddenly gained rank.

Phluid from BHW and I had a discussion about this a while ago and we are starting to think especially post penguin there is some kind of neg happening from spun web 2's. Originally we were thinking they would be just discounted (which would be the smart move by Google) however Google has been showing they aren't so smart lately and we could be getting some neg come through. I have found no proof as yet but I am keeping an open mind about it. Anyway from now on any tier 1 and tier 2 web 2's I do will not have spun content. Expensive, but hey I got some good sites that I don't want to damage so that is the way I will be moving in the future.

Web 2.0s have no penalty. The penalty people see is actually a lack of value, and this comes from tier 2 pyramids, along with a lack of domain diversity.
That being said, this only applies to google.

I just recently had a site go from nothing (new site) to #1 before I even created the 2nd, 3rd and 4th tiers to the pyramid (modestly competitive niche).
So yes... web 2.0s work.
The most power comes from keeping your web 2.0 total links <40 from each domain and making EXTREMELY powerful PR generating tiers above them.

I wish there was a way to make more powerful and larger tier 2s, but I'm still left with creating a 1:20 ratio between tier 1 web 2.0s and tier 2 web 2.0s, and then injecting higher PR blogposts into tier 3 along with articles. This takes an insane amount of content, time and automation... but I'm seeing good results.

Search BHW for the list by PHPBuilt. I'm too busy to find the link at the moment. You could work for months with that list and not use them all.

Well it depends on what I do, and how I do it. 1 campaign involves around 10000 tier one pages (5-6 per domain) and involves 5-6 websites at a time.
One campaign is usually enough to rank high competition terms... and takes roughly 1-2 weeks.

I'm extremely risk adverse, however, so I have been avoiding building a massive blog network for myself for some time... not only are they expensive to make, they're unbelievable time sinks.
I think it's going to be the next step though... once things slow down (if they slow down)

I disagree with a lot of the "information" that is spread in SEO. I would basically insist that any blog network I made created the PR in the above manner for the sites at the bottom.

I'm noticing that a lot of the sites that I fired spun web 2.0's at have disappeared. However, that my be due to lack of anchor diversity.

Are you using a bad tool like Magic Submitter or SEnuke?

I certainly haven't seen anything bad from web 2.0s, but this is most true in bing/yahoo who eat them up. I'm still exploring this in detail, however.
God only knows what google is doing to their engine.
They're ranking brand new sites page 1 just by buying a bunch of PR-less footer links...

I was using Fiverr gigs mostly. Im not sure what software they were using. Most probably SEnuke. Some site have gone off the face of the planet and some have gone back a few pages on big G. Yahoo and Bing are mostly unaffected.

Besides if you build it an hour ago and then your site got hit it was something else.... Google isn't that fast.

SEnuke did this (or gave no results) about a year ago.

You have to be very meticulous with your structures, images/video embeds, etc.
