Over Optimization Penalty Launched Today

You may want to kill me, but i saw an a really good site in one of my niches popes up on top of google. It used to get around 200 000 visits per at the middle of 2011 , but now they are getting about 800 000. They probably make as much as $100 000 per month.

Some interesting points:
  1. 40K links
  2. 2K domains
  3. Guest posts links/reference links/mentioning
  4. Anchor distribution: 15% images, 20% domain name (no http://), 15% exact keyword, 10% exact page title ... last 30% i can't see.

Two days ago, I was surpemely depressed. Now that I've got new strategies to attack websites (that I KNOW work), I'm actually kind of excited. Lots of work... but this update has overall been a good thing. I still have my jobs, and I also learned a shit-tonne about SEO in the process that I just let myself glaze over because of outsourcers :D

Whatever doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

could you though some light on your strategy

You know what? My sites got hit, (:youdontsay:) however, I'm not angry at google now. Everyone (including me) was saying stuff like "oh, google is forcing adwords", "google wants to screw bussinesses over" but at the moment I don't see any garbage ranking (like two weeks ago was). I think google really DID IMPROVE search quality!

"Oh no! We're screwed than! Lets give up!"
Well, F no. That only means we will have to tweak our tricks, thats it. I also was about to quit before I saw this article http://www.micrositemasters.com/blog/penguin-analysis-seo-isnt-dead-but-you-need-to-act-smarter-and-5-easy-ways-to-do-so/
If you haven't read this already I really advise you to do so. This article basically states that NONE OF THE SITES THAT WERE PENALIZED HAD 60% OR LOWER AMOUNT OF THE TARGETED ANCHOR TEXTS LINKING TO THEM.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks a lot for this, finally some "real" info what actually happened. I have to admit that my sites really sucks at anchor variations, usually because my sites are quite old and I have been building links in times where it was not such big issue. Well now I will try to change anchor link whenever it is possible. Well, no one mentioned if penguin also cares about deep linking. When I will buy new links to have better anchor text variations, do you think it would be wise to buy such links to inner pages?

same here... i've change the anchors on one of my sites and the site climbed up 40 spots. (from 69 to 29)

I think it's going to take a little more than changing your anchor link this time. You're going to want to make it look as natural as possible to the search engines. This means building a lot of links that have no anchor text. Think about it....when people naturally link to a site, they rarely use anchor text. It's usually just the site URL and nothing more.

i managed to get my 50 positions back just by sending 1k scrapebox link+wiki (pr>1) with random anchors {go there|more info at them|visit those guys|bla bla}

ir might be just a dance, but hey, at least it started to move, as been down for 2 weeks ;]

Yeah also think about direct SB blast. have not been doing this for long time.. but I'm already in deep shi. and if the main problem is anchor text variatons it should help.

How much time after the blast did you see positive movement? Were the wikis submitted to any indexer service(s)?

3-5 days after blast i came back
i never use any indexer, letting my links to get crawled in time naturally

Thanks for the response. I hope your results are long lasting. :) I'm going to throw about 2000 bookmarks at one of my sites using around 70 different anchors. I will report back with my results. The only way it could get worse with this site is a total deindex. lol

Have any of you guys noticed any rolling updates for Penguin?

I have a site that was completely unaffected for the past two weeks, but yesterday and today I have seen big hits to major terms. No messages in GWT, but it's clear that something is happening. I just find it strange that rankings have been consistent for months, and all of a sudden, two weeks after a major algo update, rankings are tanking.

The only "questionable" links to these pages are really old directory links. No scrapebox, xrumer, article networks, or paid links that I can see in the profile.

Anybody else seen some weird stuff today?

^ yeah.. one of my site which was ranking on 1st position got hit yesterday and now i am at 10th position!

I checked GWT but no change there also!

I now have a total of 6 of my wiki sites/buffer/article2.0 ranking on the top 2 pages for my term, and the MONEY PAGE nowhere in the top 100
