Just Had My Paypal Hacked And Drained

So I have a paypal account that I use for personal stuff like gifts for family and various other random purchases. Usually I try to keep $1000 in it so if I get an impulse to buy something online its always there. Well low and behold it also happens to be linked to my main bank account for obvious reasons.

Today was a pretty normal day, worked on some offline clients sites, checked the old clickbank account and adsense blah blah blah.

Then I move on to my bank account before I pay some bills and I notice a weird $87.xx amount from paypal in my withdraws. Now mind you no money should come out of my account unless the first $1000 is extinguished. Come to realize some asshole got my account details and bought 5:

Amazon Kindle Fire 8GB, Wi-Fi, 7in - Black - New & Sealed

From 5 different retailers that I have never even heard of. Now I have my bank account frozen and changed all my passwords for everything important. Fraud claims have been filed by both the bank and paypal.

I even have the address of the guy that did it but he lives all the way in Georgia and he is damn lucky that I am in California :censored:
Am I allowed to post it here so somebody that lives close can go smack him in the head for me

Needless to say I feel violated!

Thankfully it wasn't too serious but any guy that willingly messes with another guys money is asking for it big time. And trust me I don't let stuff like this go easily without some kind of retribution.

Ouch I know that feeling. I had my paypal hacked once, luckily I receive email notifications from paypal anytime there's any sort of transaction. I started seeing the emails pour in on my phone. Amounts ranging from a few dollars to $40 all to some odd company in the Philippines. Within 15 minutes close to $200 had been taken out. Luckily I was quickly able to contact paypal and my bank and have both of the account placed on hold. It took a few weeks but paypal did their investigation and I got every cent back. Good luck, I'm sure you'll be able to have all of your cash restored.

Yeah I have already had two of the 5 purchases issued as refunds within the last few minutes. Say what you will about paypal but they are actually impressing me with the speed at which they are processing this. I have had the account for 5 years now though so they have made a lot off of me in fees over that period of time. Glad to see it finally working in my favor lol.

Where was/is the breach?

Did he use a key logger?

Did you provide someone else with your login info?

How was he able to gain access?

That info would definitely help others avoid the same pitfalls.

File a report with his local police so that you have record of it. Also, if you have his address they can run by and try to give him a little scare. I live in Florida and had to do that before in another state for someone threatening me.

Amazingly I think he hacked my gmail account first which is where my info was. When I logged in to gmail today it said my acoount was accessed from some random place so I changed the password. I didnt think nothing of it until later in the day. Honestly I am not to sure but I will keep you guys updated.

This is why you should have a PayPal security key or at least set up your account to require a mobile pin #. Makes it much harder to have your account comprised. Gmail also now has two-factor authentication you might want to consider enabling it.

Yea, all you need to do is place an authorized transaction dispute and you'll get it all back.

To tell you the truth it is definitely something I have never worried about until now. But yeah extra precaution is being employed as of now.

If not here, then there are other sites that will allow it. You can then post a link to that site from here.
People here can do some amazing things.

Cops here once "borrowed" a UPS delivery truck and delivered a pound of marijuana to a house.
UPS guy asks for "Mr. Jones" as it has to be delivered direct to the person, otherwise he can come back the next day.
Dumbass at door says "Yes, that's me." and SWAT hit the whole house from all 4 sides. Everyone inside went to jail
The children inside went to child protective services.
The next night, (it is said that) Neighbors (who had had MORE than enough) burnt down the rent-house and now it's a vacant lot.
Quite the little drama. Sometimes, some situations are at a flashpoint, and one little spark is all it takes to create a big-huge explosion.
What never works is doing nothing.

Dankerman666, if I were you, I'd pull up Task Manager, assuming that you are on a PC, and identify each and every process running on your computer. You need to ensure that you do not have any type of key logger on your system. This is a case of being better safe than sorry.

Yeah I am running clean. I am a big computer nerd so that's the first thing I safeguarded my computer from is security threats. All my site passwords and valuable information is 128 bit encrypted
