Over Optimization Penalty Launched Today

This may not mean anything, but I figured I'd share it anyways. I had a keyword stuck in the middle of page one for a very long time. I blasted that keyword a lot before penguin with spun content (70-90%). Penguin didn't change the positions of this particular site, so all of the keywords were in the same spot.

I decided to type an article completely from scratch and post it to a web 2.0. I didn't spin or post that article anywhere else in any form. Barely 5 seconds after I got this page indexed my keyword was #1. Keyword density on the article was practically nonexistent. I only placed one link at the bottom.

Generally I don't do this. I usually take an article, spin it to hell and back, and then post it to a bunch of sites. This could just be a fluke. What I plan to do now is type a few more original articles and target some other keywords on other sites. Maybe this process is repeatable.

What age does your website have? Where or to what platforms did you blast that keyword before penguin? Blog Comments? Forum Profiles? Bookmarks? Articles to article directories? Blog posts to private blog networks? To web 2.0's? Did you use Linkwheels or just direct blasts? Did you blast with main keyword? Variations of it? How many? For how long? How many have been indexed? Did you ping them? Used any indexing service? How is the competition for the keyword? Low? Medium? High? Is your site thin or a large authority? What kind of backlinks have you had before that? and so on..
P.S: How much do you charge for such a magical article? lol

Thanks for this. Please update your results. One question - was the link you placed on the bottom a link back to your money site home page or an affiliate link or what?

I have some web 2.0s that I can blast through PING but obviously, I'd have to log into them seperately to really post a decent article that has a link in it. I was thinking of doing the same thing and targetting the main KW I had for my EMD website that got penalized over the weekend. I mean if you can get the article to rank for your KW and it has a link to the money site I suppose that is another way to get traffic albeit not ideal.

Weird thing happened today. When I woke up I checked my rankings, ALL OF MY SITES WERE BACK! I was ecstatic. Then 20 minutes later all gone again. I'm gonna end up ripping all my hair out here pretty soon.

same thing, some are staying and climbing. The crazy dancing, serps moving every 5 seconds has stopped. Took some losses. Adding more press releases.

I am back in as of today for some words that I was dropped for. I haven't done anything. It just happened. I hate this roller coaster.
 
One thing I have noticed with my site that got hit is that the average time on site has improved a heap and bounce rate has significantly dropped. My main keyword was at #2 before the update then went out of the top 100. It has come back to position 4 today. All my other keywords are still failing but I am now ranking for random words that I havent before. These new ones are keeping people on my site a lot longer. Am only getting 10-15 people a day now instead of around 100 but still early days. Oh and for the comment about maybe joomla not being hit thats not the case as my site is made from joomla with around 30 pages all unique.

prior strategy was typical of what a lot of people were doing i think. spun content spread across familiar blog sites and article directories. very little profile/commenting type of links. bookmarking and social links done to a medium degree.

the site didn't get hit by penguin, but i figured if google was making a serious effort to reward quality, original content then i'd give it a shot. i'll have to put some effort into some more original, high quality stuff and point them at different spots to see if this was just a fluke or something real.
 
After reading this post, what have always been true about having a good website is having quality content. Google can change a lot of things to make it harder for us internet marketers but the one thing they cant deny is quality content. Yes it makes having a website and making money online a bit more difficult but overall adding quality content should be the 1st goal, 2nd goal should be taking care of the consumer and then we will make money.

this penguin update is NOT about quality content on site... this is all about links to site and specifically links to certain pages....I have over 1000 pages on my site and most if not all rank #1 or #2, but my five money pages which I built almost all the links to are no where to be seen...

From 1997 to 2003 I had most of the top 20 positions using my network of sites on Yahoo and then Google when it came around. If anyone remembers loansamerca that was me. I was bringing in over $150K a month- no advertising, all SEO. Sold it in 2003 to a private mortgage bank. I returned back to SEO in 2008 and was dominating insurance and investment products. High end stuff. All my sites were first page and up until last week I was averaging $61,000/month. Now I am at $0. I was all white hat- meaning no scrapebox, xrumer, pyramids. I only bought links on high PR related sites. I was spending $7800/month on whitehat links. This is the first time I have ever questioned my skills. What do I do now? This reminds me of the last scene in "Casino" when Robert Deniro's character says "After the Tangiers, the big corporations took it all over." Remember when the Internet allowed the little guys to make money and allow anyone to start a business with almost $0 start up costs? "But in the end, I wound up right back where I started". Good luck everyone! I'm finished.

interesting...i like your story, not b/c i revel in your misery, but b/c I am in the same boat...

i never made the amount of money that you did but i provided a nice income for myself and my family, putting food on the table and paying the bills, now it seems i am shit out of luck...

i am looking to sell the site that i own and the product i sell, we will see if the sale works out in my favor...

i know many people have said this, but FUCK GOOGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...and i don't mean boycott google, just NEVER click on any ads!!!!!!!!!...this puts money in google's pocket...

So let me get this strait. You got yourself to supposedly making all this money. And no you got zero and you gave up?

Is there something I am missing here? You must have done something to get up to making that much. If your giving up after making that much money, you are either a really huge pussy or your just a huge pussy.
