Question about on-page SEO

Hi everyone!

So I am currently building my very first adsense site, working on building content and on-page SEO. I'm using the SEOquake plugin for Firefox. The diagnosis function shows a lot of useful information, but some of it made me worry. For example, it found images without alt attribute, which is bad as far as I know. These are the header image and the background of my menubar, etc. so images used by the WP theme itself, and I have yet to find a way to fix this. My question is, will this hurt my rankings? Can I fix this by adding article related images and assigning appropiate alt attributes to them?

My other question is about text/HTML ratio. I know that the more text the better, and my main article has plenty of text, but some of my posts doesn't have a very good ratio, like daily update posts, etc. So, will this hurt my rankings? Or do I only have to make my articles I want to rank with to have perfect onsite SEO? Will my pages get ranked based on the whole site, or independently?

Also, what is the optimal text/HTML ratio? My main article has only like 22%, even though it has like 700 words. Is that enough, or should it be much higher? What is your opinion on this?

Re images...alt titles for images are important, as is the name of the image file, IF those keywords are relevant for your site and if those images are NOT navigational or theme related. Since they are, you could be seen as over-optimizing, which is a no no. IF you want to try it anyway, you can make the alt desc relevant, but the point is if it's a header, don't name the file header with an alt of "header for site," name it something related to the keyword w/ header as well, and alt desc it with the text either from the menu that's relevant to your keyword or other relevant text. If the image is used for navigation purposes, add an alt that explains the keyword used in the image and that would help people navigate. (Technically, remember, the alt is for people who let's say are blind or have image loading turned off....If the image contains a lot of text, use the text from the image in the alt attribute itself as well.)

The general consensus, as of now, is that 1% keyword density with just 1 H1 tag (with keyword) is sufficient. There are also a few who have contrasting opinions that are a lot more aggressive. We will probably have to wait a few weeks to figure out the best practices that will be compatible with the penguin update.
