So I was checking some of the keywords that I target on my sites today, and noticed something somewhat messed up.

One of my affiliate sites is product focused and has the brand name of a weight loss related product in the domain. The company don't seem to mind, and I normally rank between about number four and six for the main keyword, the company itself has the top spot (as it should) and has done since I started the site. The other main ranker is an authority site that has written an article on the product.

I noticed today that the company has been knocked off the top spot by a site that I have not been aware of until now. It is a site about weight loss in general, and although the article on this product was semi-informative and okay, there is no way that this site should be above the company, or indeed mine (which has around 15 pages talking about different aspects of the product) or the authority site article.

I ran the keywords through keyword blaze, to see what this site was doing to get such a high rank.

Below is a screenshot - looks like G think their crappy G plus is worth something extraordinary.

That's incredible! It will be interesting to see how long it sticks there. I've always avoided G+ but this could change things...

O_O...

More and more idiocracy coming from google..
I wonder when it'll stop

Interesting post OP

Wow, google never ceases to amaze me =/. I've stayed away from google plus for years now for this very reason. Take it in stride my friend.

Why do you thing that google started the "+1" button, just for fun?

LOL, no, but I thought it might hopefully become defunct like some of their other not so great schemes to take over the internet and the entire world.

G plus is useless in my opinion, other than maybe for a handful of niches.

I mean what woman who is overweight and trying to find a solution, is going to click the G-plus button and let everyone in her circle know about it? Especially as only about half a percent of this demographic probably have a G-plus account anyway. Any weight loss-related site that has no real web presence, but more than 100 G-pluses obviously bought them, but they get rewarded with the no. 1 spot for a so-so article that is full of affiliate links. (Well done to the site owner though, my beef is not with him).

I have a site that talks about an anti-aging method, and gets about 600 - 800 unique visitors a day. I have a share plugin that is prominent on every page, but in 18 months I have only a handful of shares although I get around 70 repeat visitors daily. There are some things that people research that they do not want other people to know about.

How to cure hemorrhoids or treatements for STDs are other examples that spring to mind, but I suppose G will reward a site in those niches that have plenty of G-pluses. :D

Maybe you should buy 50 or so Google +1s and see if it has an effect? Google are definitely doing something fishy nowadays

I earn a bit from this site every month so don't want it to be penalized. But I have another site that earns me nothing, that is on page 6 for it's main KWs. I will check out it's current rankings tomorrow, and buy some plusses.

Emmm, this an interesting thread. It's a fact that google always for itself benefit. I think nothing wrong about that. But I didn't think it would be like that !!. Thnx for sharing OP
