Search Engine Watch Says Don't Use Anchors Like "Click Here"

I think what Manny521 said makes a good deal of sense. Those types of anchors don't look like someone doing SEO and look more like a user trying to be helpful in posting a link.

I'm going to try this and see if the theory pans out...

i think you can use "click here" as one of your de-optimized anchors but you should also have a list of a few hundred others like "find out more info" "read the related article"...etc...

be creative with it and you can build yourself a very large list of de-optimized anchor text...

and use lots of naked urls too...and if your website/company has a brand name, use that more than anything...

This is excellent advice.

Adding links for the purpose of appearing natural is something that I do and it works very well.

Like manny said, these aren't links for optimization purposes, but they definitely should have their place in your overall SEO plan IMHO.

I think "click here" is perceived by the Google algorithm as an affiliate link, and Google doesn't like that. If it automatically add a penalty to the site, I don't know but.. anything is possible with the big G

Think ahead of search engines, what are some factors that search engines would employ in a link-analysis algorithm?

Anchor text diversity, especially un-optimized anchor texts. Unlike what some users think, most bloggers do use unoptimized anchor texts when linking to websites. For several reasons, because they don't want to help other's "SEO" out of spite, and because from a user standpoint it can look spammy if each link is a perfect anchor text link. It just doesn't make sense.

Which is why backlink profiles with nothing but perfectly optimized anchor text links aren't natural. Its easy to identify who's trying to "over optimize" by running this type of analysis on a websites backlink profile.

While these links unoptimized links may not pass the anchor text value, it will still pass along pagerank and "link juice" and help assure that you don't get bitch slapped by Google's lame algo updates.

if you want someone to click and follow the link, obviously click here may be your defining moment to actually make some money... it certainly has its value... also a few sprinkled here and there will certainly help dilute your link profile to look more natural instead of keyword stuffed links. its all good...
