Why doesn't the US Gov't make online betting legal? They spend millions busting down these sites when they could be making millions taxing these sites. Seems silly.

They will be making those mils once the way is paved for established casinos in las vegas to take over. Offshore entities like bodog and fulltilt didn't make them money.

Just goes to show that the online gambling world is like the Wild West. No security, and lots of shady businesses operating in that space. Just look at Full Tilt Poker. It was one of the biggest names in teh business and turns out they were stealing player funds. Let's not even mention Absolute Poker, which had super-user accounts capable of seeing hole cards.

So glad I got out of poker before Pokerstars went down.

The US gov. is trying to make a statement. If u remember, Megaupload was, and still is, accused of "money laundering, racketeering...". Its the thing they use to get what they want. The worst people to steal from is the government, and thats what they see it as if ur not paying the taxes. So yeah, thats why they go for money laundering. In these big ass operations, they will find somehting that someone did that they can put a stamp on
Funny thing is, u r supposed to b innocent until proven guilty, yet by seizing the site they pretty much kill it, even if they would revive it after being proven innocent.

The indictment focuses on the movement of funds from accounts outside the U.S., in Switzerland, England, Malta, and Canada, and the hiring of media resellers and advertisers to promote Internet gambling.

"Sports betting is illegal in Maryland, and federal law prohibits bookmakers from flouting that law simply because they are located outside the country," Rosenstein said in a statement. "Many of the harms that underlie gambling prohibitions are exacerbated when the enterprises operate over the Internet without regulation."

That is a truly scary quote but we'll emphasize that: "The indictment focuses on the movement of funds outside the U.S." and that you can't just "flout US law" by not being in the US. What also needs to be understood is that the domain bodog.com was registered to via a non-US Registrar, namely Vancover's domainclip.

The the government wants to control gambling revenues through taxes. many local governments in the states are cash strapped, and many have approved local casinos, so I guess they are going after all competitions that are not contributing ie online gambling,

If you have done something that makes you liable in a country's jurisdiction you can be prosecuted for it. And that country can send a extradition request to the country you are living in. This is been around for years its not some new thing because of the internet. And the internet doesn't make you exempt from it.

No it's the way the US govt. are coming after people. You don't see the UK government wanting to extradite people from a foreign country. It's complete nonsense what the US govt. is doing.

And the guy's operation was based out of Costa Rica. He's a Canadian citizen. He has no affiliations to the US, so if the US needs something go f*cking do it in Costa Rica or Canada.

Agree. Lobbying has undermined the competition that makes capitalism work and democracy fair. I wouldn't blame all American citizens for this ridiculous state of affairs, but as usual, the majority of the population is stupid as fuck.
