Is it better to use lots of keywords clustered together or focus just a few. And how few 3,5,10,20 100?

All going to a home page that is already ranking in the top 30 for my most targeted keywords.

I'd like to rank better for those and also pickup long tail variations. I have several sites I want to do this for. Also I like you tube bonus but I'd like to provide my own videos.
