Best Forum Hosting? Blogger or Wordpress?

My uncle want to open a site about the country he's from. He's from a 3rd world country in the caribbean called "Guyana."

He will update the blog daily with all the latest news about the country and he wants to open a general forum.

So what I'm asking is, what forum hosting should he use? I'm not sure how it works with 'vbulletin', I see prices like over $800....lol. All what he wants is to pay about $10-$20 monthly...

And is wordpress or blogger better? He also wants to include adsense in his blog/forum.

PhpBB is free, and so is SMF - both good alternatives to VBulletin. Of the two, I think SMF looks cleaner and more professional out of the box, but you can do good stuff with both of them.

If he wants to have a self-hosted site with a lot of flexibility and a lot of plugin options, I'd recommend WordPress over Blogger.

does wordpress support adsense? And how much is for vbulletin? Monthly?
 
Okay, from years of experience.

Unless you are a organized buisness or really complex community, don't use vBulletin. In my opinion, it's too expensive and was made for businesses and very large communities.

I have used SMF on many projects in the past, and I must say it is my favorite. There are tons of mods/plugins/themes to choose from, the community at SMF is a nice one, and it's FREE.

As for blog platform, go with Wordpress.
 
Get a hosting with hotgator and a domain,login to your hosting account->cpanel->fantastico you can install wordpress and a phpbb/smf forum with 2-3 clicks,i wouldnt spend too much money on a small comunity forum
 
I'll make this simple for you dude (I've done some learning myself recently about this) ->

Small site (100 active users) = HostGator.com
Medium Site (200-600 active users) = GlobalGold.co.uk
Big Site (600+ active users) = URLjet.com (No adult content)

You can take the above as gospel, as I've done all the shitty research on forum hosting!

For a large offshore host I would recommend "Amerinoc" not through personal experience but because of some huge reviews I've came across.

You need to realise "Forums" use alot of resources and will need alot more power than some wordpress blog that gets 100 hits a day. Forums need power, memory and bandwith.

what about bluehost?
 
I used to use bluehost for a small forum and had no problems with them. I can't say how they'd handle massive traffic, but for small sites they were good - decent support, and reliable too.

Well for the shared host you can use

They are free and have been up for 10 years. I have been using them for the last 2 years and they have blazing fast speed, which is faster than most paid hosts.

For the blogging system, choose Wordpress. It has such a helpful community and a load of plugins and themes you can use to customise the blog towards the way you like it. Also it has great SEO optimisation.

For the forum community choose MyBB. This forum software is very stable and can take lots of load and users and still be up and running very fast. It's very optimised and is very easy to use. Moreover, it has such a helpful community and lots of mods and themes.

If you do it the way I just told you, all you will need to pay for is the domain. And that is about $10 a year which is nothing! You'll keep all the profit you make with Adsense.

Isn't hostgator good enough? I have no problem spending about $20 monthly. And if I get about 500 people on my forum, I'll gladly switch to vbulletin. :)

I first started in IM using bluehost and think they're hosting and support is great, however when you look into forum hosting reviews, bluehost is never mentioned or even considered.... so based on that I wouldn't go near them with a forum.

The 3 I listed to you are big into forum hosting and won't let you down. HostGator is starting to get very sloppy though... their downtime is increasing and their support is starting to get poor. This is according to a large amount of forum webmasters out there, if you choose to spend a few days reading up you'll see this.

I've looked into hostrocket (which is well recommended). They're actually "dotblock hosting" if you want to host a forum with them, but when I tried to open an account they we're extremely unhelpful, and so based on my short experience I'd say steer clear, I wouldn't like to have a big problem with them so I ran away quick.

Regarding forum software -

mybb if your going to upgrade to vbulletin
smf (simple machines forum) if your going to stay free.
I.P board if you want the latest in technology and speed (monthly subscription)

I've done the research for you, so please do heed my advice, I'm not naming hosts for the sake of it, or because I'm a reseller, I'm only stating what I know for a fact.
