Is it possible to create a glossy background like http://a3.twimg.com/profile_background_images/423728090/BANNER2.png using Photoshop?

I searched for a YouTube video but they aren't great.

There is a photoshop action that does pretty close...perhaps you can tweek it a bit:

Duplicate the layer.
Rotate vertical.
Insert gradient from white to transparent from top to bottom.
Change opacity to 50%.
On a new layer, use brush to create the shadow (+ blur filter and opacity to 50-70%).

It's not an image. It's a plain white, or any colour background that I would like to make glossy.

You can make anything "glossy" if you add any kind of reflection to it, real or fake, be it lights, lights and shadows, and/or environment (ie. an object reflected on the surface, or an object reflecting the surroundings).

Just use a slight gradient... i.e.

But it's the "Reflection" of the OBJECT that gives the illusion that its a glossy surface... So you'll need to use BOTH techniques... hope that helps

Yes, that's the right idea.

I scanned the image, it's a solid color the laptop does the "Glossy" effect, the color is #ececec.

It is very easy, setup the page in photoshop ie height/width, and then create a gradient from light silver to white, you can get more specific colours using the Photoshop colour tool, then mark it from the top to the bottom and your background will be created.

Furthermore, reflection is easy, duplicate the initial layer which has the main object in. Flip it upside down in photoshop, then feather it to around 10px or so, or whatever you are happy with. And thats it.
