Unless he's willing to, voluntarily. Almost everybody in Thailand will think you're well off if you're a foreigner and expect a handout. Don't spoil them.

Just stay in the big city/major tourist destinations. Thailand is a pretty dangerous country, murder rate is second to the US and they don't have guns.
