Hmmm, could somebody monetize this. Imagine the likes and fans picked up over a free ebook entitled "The Aggressive Guide to Customizing FaceBook" that emphasizes features like "how to turn off timeline" and similar tips. "Just go to this (CPA offer) page to get your free copy..."

I am not a fan of the timeline and at the same time I dont dislike it.
Here is the way I see it, If it bothers you(people) to much, this means they spend to much time on there and love Facebook to much to leave.
If it does not bother you that much you are there to chat with friends and share pictures or jokes so you will learn the change and keep up with friends.
In any case people say they will leave but not many will, really are we all going to go back to myspace to chat?
But I never look at my profile so as long as it does not have a fat girl trying to run with a kite GIF I dont really care.

It is the biggest change FB has employed, but people will get used to it like every other update. I think google+ and Facebook are going to be the dominant social web platforms for the next few years at least. FB has the advantage of everyone being on it already, to change that momentum and get people to switch to a new network is going to take a lot of time.
I see a difference between FB and G+ in that FB seems to cater to more everyday internet users and probably a younger crowd. G+ is better suited to tech-savvy users, probably older males in general.
This leaves people with 2 different landscapes on different ends of the user spectrum. Between the 2 websites most people will find what they want in a social network. And you aren't limited to choosing one or the other, many people have FB AND G+ accounts... I don't see Facebook going anywhere soon.

They say it has 800 million users, but this is not accurate because at least 1-5% of the users have multiple accounts.

It has 800 million users and is long overdue to be replaced by a "newer, trendier" site. Only problem is everybody is too distracted checking out their gay timelines to get any work done.
Actually I think big G is on track to be the biggest fail of a company. How many spinoffs have they tried now? And if they keep fuking with their algo's, banning adsense users for no reason, and being hypcrites they are gonna lose their cash cow and their only claim to fame. Then they will be up shite creek without a paddle. At least FB knows their place and stays focused on the one thing they do best.

The fact that huge amounts of people are complaining is sure sign that facebook is embedded in these peoples lives. They get press just by making a couple of changes.. If People where not talking about changes to facebook that is when you can count on them going under.. but I don't think that will happen for a long time... If ever.

You forget that BHW is full of smart cookies... we look at things in a different way. But, it so effing tru that the average user on facebook does not have an average brain.
The timeline will be a welcome change, you forget - music and entertainment has taught people to accept new things ( odd things) . So the new timeline thing will probably bring back old users - who have abandoned thier accounts for something else.
For the marketers - this means more money. At least, they are'nt touching the ads. Look on the bright side and ask yourselves this question -
How can i use this to make more money ?

Perfect time for a new one to hit the street been working on my social network for less than a year now pufed google it. In beta right now waiting for a bigger team aka more than 1.

i think your on the right track. . . . I've been hunting around and have seen a number of these new ones pop up. . but I think most are missing the main points that need to be addressed.

I haven't had Facebook in so long I didn't even know what timeline was. So I Youtubed it and the official video has HALF dislikes, and that obviously says NOTHING to Facebook... Come on Facebook. People outright say they hate it but they roll it out anyway. I can't wait for a new social network to come out to exploit... I mean use.
