Bit confused - link pyramids = 0 effect, direct links = turbo effect

Link Pyramid is a myth if you consider Linking strategy or go with the diagram.

The only reason of creating Link Pyramid is to make sure that the 1st tier links earn authority with time, may be some good Google page rank after 3-4 months.. That's the only reason why we create backlinks to the 1st tier.

The same case why High PR blog posts works great than PR 0 Blog posts.

Conclusion:
While building your 1st tier, make sure they earn authority or at least a decent page rank with time, may be after 3-4 months, with Google's next Update.

Nuff said.

I also agree with phpbuilt, you surely can't be expecting such quick results in such a competitive kw. It takes time. Even if you have been out of seo for a while the principles won't change that much that you can achieve results instantly.

Even with shit loads of quality original content, and high authority sites backing you it will take at least 8 months to get to the first page. In fact the link pyramid route won't even get you to the first page on such a competitive kw.

How is my post not constructive? I'm the only one who has pointed out the real issues in this entire thread, my posts are the most constructive of all.

You posted what is essentially a challenge to the link pyramid method. Lots of people have good success with it. Lots of people provide this service -- constructing link pyramids as a SEO service. Lots of newbies are out there looking for guidance on the best way to build effective links to their website.

You posted a thread that attempts to turn the method upside down. It is potentially confusing to newbies. It is potentially harmful advice (if not true) and people follow the advice and see less benefits to their websites. It is potentially harmful to those who have buy/sell threads which sell link pyramids.

So ... you have a 1.8 mil exact match keyword on a 3 month old website and you have deduced link pyramids are ineffective.

- maybe its the fact you're sandboxed with a 3 month old site
- maybe Google is suspicious of a 3 month old site with 180k pages indexed and needs time to run algorithms on your content
- maybe 1.8 mil exact search needs way more than link pyramids. most people aren't chasing after such high volume exacts, and for their purposes link pyramids work just fine
- there are over 200 factors when it comes to ranking, isolating link pyramids as being ineffective and totally ignoring the other 200 factors isn't conclusive at all

I could go on and on ... if you want to know my true purpose here, its to add a little balance to the accusation that link pyramids are ineffective, in my opinion they are effective.

OK; that reads already a lot more constructive :)

I am not contesting the effectiveness of link pyramids... Not at all.
I was asking what your experiences (your's as in BHW) are right now with link pyramids. I know they were effective and all, but I promote only this one website atm and further develop it since it's a huge-*** site so I have no references if link pyramids are maybe not effective in my niche only because all high ranking sites in my niche have spammy links, or if it is ineffective in general...

Or if it just takes more time now after Panda than before etc etc

I was, simply put, asking IF link pyramids are not effective anymore and if direct linking is the way to go right now. Of course it can be anything inbetween, takes longer to be effective now, is less effective, or only effective with specific sites.

So only because I am myself asking a question, shouldn't be harmful to people who sell link pyramids and also not be dangerous for newbies...

About my site, I don't think I am sandboxed for the specific terms as the rankings still slowly improve, the amount of content is quite normal for my niche and almost all sites have that much pages.

So you are saying still see the same success with link pyramids as before?

Well one thing which is striking me :

180k from 500K pages indexed.

I believe you are on the first line of G. Panda's targets.

Are you sure your website is well optimized to receive an efficient link building ?

Are all your pages are relevant / unique / top class content ?

How is your net linking , anchors, titles ?

My point is before even considering the efficiency of a link building pyramid, you should make sure your on site SEO has been properly done.

Otherwise to answer your question, direct link building is a faster process, link pyramid is meant to increase the authority of the links you create, it takes time to bring the value you are trying to build.

Link Pyramids works good, but for bigger competition you need to diversify the links.. you'll not see much improvement only from link pyramids. Try link pyramids, high pr blog posts, wikis, articles, manually created web 2.0 properties etc..

Good Luck

I politely disagree :)

It's not the first website I ranked for highly competitive kw's and it never took me 8 months. Ok, I didn't do any seo for over 2 years but I can not believe that after Panda it is impossible to achieve that, imho it should be even easier as Google takes social signals a lot into account.

To be clear, my website is not a spammy, scraped website with shit tons of useless pages. I get tons of fB likes, +1's and whatnot, I always tried to build extremely useful sites that people WILL like and come back and tell their friends about it, spam my way to the top for highly competitive terms and once I get a storm of traffic the real links I get from real visitors that talk about my site will stabilize my site.

I always found it easier that way, so I only have to focus on a few keywords, and once I rank after a few months I simply spam long tails and otherwise get links from my visitors.

If that still works as good for me as before I can't tell for sure, but it does seem so since I am ranking, and improve.

Normally I started off with link pyramids though, and that was enough to get me where I am now in the serps, but now it didn't do anything for me... hence my questions

My pages are all well optimized, clean strucure, fast, using amazon CDN and 10 cnames to deliver static content. So speed-wise my site is top of the line.

In my niche the pages don't have lots of text-content, webmaster tools says no duplicate content (except a few duplicate meta tags, maybe 50 pages or so)

PS: site gets updated almost daily with 5-10 new pages.

For my purposes, link pyramids are the most effective method of building links.

Then again, I'm not building half million page sites (anymore). I have in the past, and its not easy. Google will take their time, but eventually they will run their algorithms on your 500k pages. If the content is superb, they'll all stay indexed (not likely).

If its all machine generated content, which can be found elsewhere on the internet, and nothing is unique enough to make Google fall in love with it, your site will drop pages big time. Getting 180k pages indexed isn't the big trick ... keeping them indexed is.

Taking a site like that, and trying to promote it with link pyramids -- I have a difficult time visualizing how that could be effective. Only the smallest fraction of your deep links could benefit. That makes your homepage or a few category pages as the only targets of your link building campaign.

You've already got 180k freshly indexed pages all pointing to your homepage. If Google decides that you're not going to be allowed to keep those pages indexed after it runs its algorithms on your content, then your homepage will be losing a ton of indexed backlinks, which will make you drop. Being in the first 3 months is sort of like the honeymoon period sweet-spot where Google gives you the benefit of the doubt, and that will probably disappear soon.

Putting up tons of link pyramids could be stabilizing your rank from dancing too badly while Google decides what to do with your half mil pages. My guess though is that a 3 month old half mil page website has a ton of dancing it'll be doing any day now.

Well, normally I built link pyramids only for the high volume kw's, spammed deeplinks to keep a ratio of about 70% hp links and rest deeplinks

Then after I rank for the high volume stuff and my rank has already stabilized I would spam more deeplinks for all kinds of long tail variations.

Competition all has 1 million+ indexed pages, it's pretty likely I will to :)

So yeah, I guess I should either forget about link pyramids atm maybe and simply do 1 tier links, or build massive amounts of link pyramids... like 500+

I guess I'll test both

The site is btw 5 months old, not 3... It's finished since 3 months, but i started promoting it only last month because I was busy with other stuff before.

Google is able to index my shop site over 900k links without doing a single seo. after 7 months. The Domain is 1 months ago at the time the project started.

I bet Op is running a shop site:)

I believe what has happened here is that you need a diverse range of links. The link pyramids do not work best on their own. The wikis do not work on their own. The social bookmarks again same. So now you have added new ingredients to the mix si why you may be seeing improvements in rankings.

My personal opinion would be to look into press releases, and if your site is e-commerce like I think it is, try some media buys.
