Social network site is like orkut, facebook, myspace and doing work on them is of no use for SEO.

Doing work on social bookmarking sites and web 2.0 blogs is very important in terms of seo.

Use as many as you want to, the more the better. Web2.0s are about the highest quality links you can get, because the links are in content. Spin the articles so they're unique.

Regarding how many articles, reuse your web2.0s and continue posting to them. It will make it an updated blog which Google will return to and consider more important than if you only post one or a few articles then never return.

opendiary has some issues with it. If you type sitependiary.com you get 72k results, but they're tag, category and odd pages -- none of them represent anyone trying to SEO anything.

You can't find sitependiary.com "ugg boots" or sitependiary.com "seo services" or anything else people would normally want to create links for their linkwheels with.
