GSA Search Engine Ranker worth it?

I'm using the trial right now. The proxy handling is maddening. Buttons and links that won't respond; seeming inability to input one's own proxies, and even the behavior of the proxy form itself is weird.

And it looks like it can't handle subdomain projects properly either.

Right now this is brutal.

A piece of crap so far. Slow as a dog too and there is no thread control.

Something must be wrong on your end because I just tried importing the proxies 4 times and they loaded perfect each time? You were referring to loading the proxies from a .txt file right? If it's going slow for you, I'd use private proxies. Are you using version 1.54?

I also added a subdomain (http://www.test.nfl.com and http://test.nfl.com) and it seems to work fine? You must be looking in the project window and only seeing the root of the domain. The project window doesn't show the full domain. If you click the edit button you can see that your URL is still the same and it is submitting using your subdomain just like you input.

Check it out, I let it run last night and woke up to a verified PR8 .EDU d0f0llow comment with only 28 outbound links. WINNING.

In 3.5 hrs SER has only made 17 submissions, none of them verified. 17 in 3.5 hrs!

Ok, the subdomain is still in the project; just not showing up in the main window. But the proxy screen is still inoperative. When I set up the proxies originally I simply hit the Add Proxys button, figuring I'd be prompted for my own.

No, that prompts SER to go scrape some. And since that moment I can do NOTHING in the Proxy form, no matter how many times I call it up. Based on its behavior I'd say that the Settings form behind it still has the focus.

I can get the Settings form back on top by switching to another application and then come back. Then I see the Settings form *on top* of the Proxy form, which it clearly should not be.

My guess is that it has something to do with the demo version itself. Maybe the nag screen is involved. This is bush league stuff.

Yes when you click the "add new proxy" button a little drop down list should appear that gives you 4 options.

I'm guessing it must be something with the demo version ... that sucks.

Edit: Since that last post I made I've let the "subdomain" test URL run and right now its 79 submissions so far and moving pretty quick. That's about an hour or so and 79 submissions so I'm guessing the private proxies must make a world of a difference lol

Turns out there was indeed a problem with the Proxy dialog "hiding" behind the Settings form. An update was pushed out maybe an hour ago(?). I got an email from GSA in response to a feedback form I filled out on their site.

Took me a few minutes to figure out how to successfully load my proxies. I hit the Test button on them and they all failed. Odd because I've been using these same proxies in a test of the nhSEO trial and they've worked fine.

Decided to start up the project anyway and now speed is much better and the proxies do not seem to be a problem. But I have captchas set off and submission rate is low.

Captchas at $6/1K? Now I know why its not on subscription! That's highway freakin' robbery! Only way to make that work is restrict the searches to higher value pages. And obviously there won't be a desire to support Captcha Sniper. So what kind of restrictions do you place on your target pages if any?

Geez I just updated the thing and you're right, there is another one. Hahaha I guess your email must have been noticed. Here is the latest update I see in the changelog.

1.55 - fix: gui was placed wrong on some systems
- new: if a project has more than one URL it is displayed in hint
- fix: demo popup could influence the gui behaviour on modal forms
- new: custom mode improved
- fix: TEST showed incorrect URLs when more than one have been used

Lol that's some good support if I've ever seen it.

For the subdomain I started earlier, right now its at 140 submitted and 5 verified. (with captcha disabled)

It takes a while to start seeing your URL's go to verified status. When I'm watching the log box at the bottom of the software I can see that it will search URL's, do some submissions, search again with maybe a new platform, do some submissions, then it will verify maybe 10-20 links at a time. I guess that's why it takes a while until you start seeing them show up.

As far as settings go it really depends on how I'm using it. If I'm blasting to some web 2.0's then I don't care much about quality like the PR or OBL's, etc I just go for mass comments.

If its directly to a money site or inner pages I usually do PR1-PR2 and up. 50-80 max OBL, and I'll edit the blacklist to make sure no porn sites are on the same page and of course I use my private proxies.

I also have their directory submitter software and it has a lot more captcha providers like deathbycaptcha and you can also adjust the multithreading.

Maybe if enough of us email them, they will add these. :D

I have been running the demo for 30 hours, so far 441 links - 128 verified for one site, some have decent page rank.

I emailed support and asked them about multi threading, they said it is on the list, maybe in the next update. If that is the case I might have to buy this one!

Testing this bitch out. Will report in about 4 days.

Haha I emailed them too and asked the same thing yesterday. They said it will be release in one of the next updates. I also mentioned adding new captcha providers like deathbycaptcha, etc.

Awesome :)

Today there was another update which was again inspired in part by my own error reports. I've gotta say the support is impressive, even if the chief problem I had yesterday was something I would never expect to see from any demo.

And Sven has been great with me in emails.

That said I've got to report the bad news. This morning I started a session which ended in failure after ~3.5 hours:

I had to kill SER. I noticed my machine was getting rather loud. I checked Task Manager and SER was consuming CPU at around 47-48%. So I clicked the Stop button. Memory usage dropped in half, but no CPU drop. I waited for a couple of minutes. No change. So I right-clicked the project(I have just one) in the grid and selected "Inactive". Still the CPU consumption stayed the same. When I tried to exit the program I was told the project was still running. So I declined to close and kept waiting.

Finally after several minutes I used the Task Manager to kill the process. I tried first to save the log but that doesn't save timing info. I'm running XP. I do have some other processes I wonder might have been getting in the way. I'm working on that.

I contacted Sven about this and he has just - literally as I write this - pushed out another update. He thinks the problem was due to a specific site SER was trying to parse.

lol I just updated to the latest version. Thanks for the heads up

Really don't know if to go for Scrapejet, NHSEO or search-engine-ranker.gsa

Scrapejet is the cheapest and i am tempted. I still don't understand wheter search-engine-ranker.gsa is far better than SJ and NHS..

I can't test all 4. Based on my reading of the nhSEO vs Scrapejet flame war I like nhSEO. I've tested nhSEO & Backlink Brigand & GSA's SER. nhSEO has so far tested much better than the other two.

But I haven't purchased nhSEO. Am nearing the end of the trial. I've racked up ~3500 links in about 5 days of operation. And that wasn't even complete 24/7. I do have BB. Eventually I want to use either BB or SER as a complement to nhSEO. Right now I don't know which one has the edge. Both seem to have some issues and this weekend I hope to get more answers.

3500 links in 5 days as in auto approve verified links or just 3500 posted links? I didn't know NHSEO had a trial. Time to test it out

GSA got another awesome tool, the Auto SoftSubmit. Kinda pricey but does an amazing work.

I have been using GSA directory submitter and it has been awesome although their UI looks a bit dated. Seems to be another quality product from GSA.

Haha just got an email from GSA saying they just added multi-threading. I've got mine set at 40 threads, I'll see what kind of damage I can do. :)

GSA after reading about it, damn it has nice functions in it! :) Nice backlink diversity!
