Hosting for private network of blogs / support sites

The fact that you're asking this question means you probably need to look at starting smaller...
Build networks in blocks (we do them in blocks of 250) and spread them across at least 50 C classes and 5 A/B classes. This means no more than 5 sites per IP, and avoid using similar themed sites on the same IP. Don't interlink in any way and avoid any kind of situation that could indicate shared ownership. This does present a problem if you're using AdSense - as it's an automatic pointer to a single point of ownership.
Use reliable C Class hosting providers. There are providers that have over 200 IP classes available, but I would put each network of 250 under a different hosting company and registrar etc. basically, further distancing them.
You also need to consider why you're building them. If they are to be a pure linking network then your build strategy will be different than if you're building a niche site network to hit whole groups of keywords etc.

*When it comes you own network, cheap is not better/best when it comes to SEO hosting. Meaning, start off with the more reputable stable providers as opposed to going with the cheapest.
Also, be weary of inexperienced start-ups and ones that are dirt-dirt cheap because they will most likely keep plunging your network into the dreaded ?Page Not Found " error SERP darkness.
*If you are looking for a perfect SEO hosting solution, you might as well be searching for a lucky charm! There simply isn?t a perfect solution out there. Your main areas of concerns should be uptime, allotted resources, tech support response time and then everything else that follows.
*You need to set up your own website monitoring service. That way you can pretty much know when sites on your network are down. The reason you set up your own is because most services are not priced based for Internet Marketers that have over ten or so sites. One exception would be a service such as nodeping.com

We are going down the a class route in the new year. Will top the network out at 100 a class sites with pr1+ dmoz listed sites, that would move a mountain, 1000 junk blogs are exactly that, think about quality, our supernova service only posts to 5 quality blogs and in a comparison test, which is still running, it is kicking the ass off of blog networks with 400+ blogs, what are you putting at the other side of the blogs, ie tier 2? This is also massively important.

1. You don't worry about having multiple sites on the same IP, even if it's only 5 sites? Won't G catch on to a pattern if you set it up like this? Or do you mean same C-class but 5 different IP's?
2. What are some of the reliable C-class hosting providers you speak of?
3. What's the main difference in build strategy between a pure link network and a niche site network? Just the fact that a pure link network won't interlink but a nice site network will?
4. Have you ever considered setting up a network with many different cheap hosts and/or free hosts, rather than a c-class hosting provider? Or would this just be too hard to manage?
5. What software do you use to manage your network (add posts, etc)?

1. Getting 500-1000 IPs will be VERY expensive. Putting 5 sites per IP class is a massive cost saving, and as long as they are different themed sites, we've never had any problems.
2. You need to experiment and ask around. It also depends on what your tech requirement is. I.e. are they Wordpress blogs with heavy use of plugins and High SQL loading, or simple php/HTML sites?
3. I wouldn't interlink anything at all. But until you've decided on what the network is design to do, then you can't ensure it's optimised for that function. A lead-gen site is built differently to an AdSense/CPA site, which is also different to a site that is being entirely to provide outbound links. You need to seriously think about the SEO features and requirements of each.
4. Some people do. I wouldn't. As crewchief said, avoid cheap hosting like the plague!
5. Our own proprietary in-house system. You could start with WordPress and spreadsheets, and move to network management software later. Eventually, you'll want your own systems. I don't touch Wordpress any more as it has such high load requirements for large networks. Php/HTML sites will run comfortably on a much lower tech platform and are far more secure and don't get hacked! Without all that SQL loading, everything runs so much faster too.
