"A Google patent, originally filed in 2003, and granted on 25th October (with Matt Cutts as one of the listed inventors) describes this problem in more detail and provides some ways that Google could potentially act to lessen the value of keywords included in domain names by recognizing when queries are commercial in nature and using a different ranking algorithm for those queries that might lessen the value of domains with keywords in them...."

Does this mean that registering an EMD may not be effective from now ?

emd have never really given me any boosts, but its more attractive to people when they see that a website has the same keywords that they typed in

EMD definitely still count but, not nearly as much as they used to... The most noticeable difference is when you are competing in top 3.

Actually EMD do give you a boost, especially if you have a .com EMD. Search in google and the see the top 10 results for many keywords. You shall understand the power of EMD. For services like micro niche websites, EMD is what people, but if the EMD is going to lose the power, thats problem for us.

I have sites with no backlinks that rank just because they are EMD, so picking one when you're still in the kw research phase for your MFA or whatever other monetization strategy you have in mind is definitely critical.

Do you have evidence that .com is better than .net or .org? I've never seen that.

I dont think you can devalue emd, how will google know if the searcher is looking for your site or the kw's in your emd.

If your emd is best dog tricks .com and I type in best dog tricks google does not know if I am looking for your site or simply "best dog tricks" so it is good business to list your emd too IMO.

Yes. A .com EMD is much much better and easier to rank. Thats the reason when you find a good keyword, most times the .com domain shall already be gone. A study have been performed on it, and here is the summary of it.

Well, I have to agree that EMD works well and keep working well. It's so much easier to rank EMD than random other domains and about those coms and nets.. trust me guys, dot org is more difficult than com or net. Usually when I buy domains I use com or net, but if none of them are available I try to use a different key phrase.

Thats exactly what this new patent from google is all about. With it approved, we can expect a change in google's algorithm to facilitate it

Again how can this algo prove this

If I type "victorias secret" how the heck can an algo tell if I am looking for info about victorias secret (as in reviews or history) or if I am looking for the site?

It cant. It might devalue them a "bit" but I dont think it can do a hardcore change because it would not be a good customer experience which of course is what google is supposed to be about.

Never likes EMDs...just too spammy IMO.

When you are going for something sort of competitive its just much better to not choose an EMD.

I have found that EMD alone will not get you top spot... however with a minimal amount of quality marketing... boom you shoot to the top as long as what your EMD is also is what your site is about.

Google could potentially act to lessen the value of keywords included in domain names by recognizing when queries are commercial in nature and using a different ranking algorithm for those queries that might lessen the value of domains with keywords in them.

This something from Matt Cutts

"...We have looked at the rankings and weights that we give to keyword domains and some people have complained that we?re giving a little too much weight for keywords in domains. And so we have been thinking about adjusting that mix a little bit and sort of turning the knob down within the algorithm so that given two different domains, it wouldn?t necessarily help you as much to have a domain with a bunch of keywords in it...."

EMD alone wont get you a top ranking. But if the competition is low, you can get an EMD to the top with no seo at all. Its not possible with other domains

Lately, in my keyword searches I have been finding it increasingly difficult to find ANY EMD for good keywords even at the microniche level (5000 or less searches per month) for either .com, .net or .org. If EMD mining is spammy, awhole lot of people are mining. One can modify the EM to get a EMD that includes the term ('wild deals 2012" instead of 'wild deal') in order to get a domain.

Well, if you check out the micro niche website services here in BHW, everyone needs only a EMD. emd are easier to rank, and they shall rank with just that in low competition niches. Even if you search for "exact match domain" ( without quotes), you can see an EMD in top 5.

When people are expecting to see the results in the least time possible, not going with an EMD shall take time to get the rankings, and people do not want to wait that much.

EMD's are definitely still effective. Especially when competing for one of the top 3 ranks.
