Need some recommendations for a college degree

So there isn't exactly a "internet marketing" degree, not like you really need one anyway, but I was wondering what would be a good degree for someone into IM.

I have already seen some mild success with IM so far and I really am kind of stuck on a degree that would benefit me in the IM world and maybe learn a thing or two in the process.

I have been thinking between Marketing and Business Economics. I just would like a second opinion from fellow black hatters.

My question is what do you recommend and what major are you guys doing/did?

Youre not gonna learn anything in Marketing and Business Economics (not anything u can learn on your own in a few mintues). But the best thing to help you out would be a programming degree or some computer science degree. Even if you fail at IM, these degrees are more employable than Marketing/Business

From what I've seen, we come from all paths of life. Some of us are Ph.Ds and others are highschool dropouts. I myself am an Engineering student. Now, this might be a stretch (seeing as to how I've never majored in business) but I think it's a go-getter attitude, someone who'll never give up no matter how many times they fail, that matters more than what degree you hold. Back when I first got here, I was pride-ridden, I felt that with a high IQ, and my position as an Academic Excellence scholarship holder, I was above people. BOY, was I put in my place. It's been a humbling and VERY enlightening experience so far... In closing, I guess the moral is: "It's not the degree that makes the person, it's the person who makes use of the degree?"

Well why don't you check out Web Design & Development at Full Sail Uni? I'm in my fifth month and I love it so far. Very important concepts like usability and color theory are explained and you also learn web design, AJAX, Javascript, PHP, server side programming and it only lasts less than two years. The problem is that it's very expensive, but if you can afford it go for it. I'm already making 4 figures/month from the stuff I've learned and applied.

Thanks, I think you're right and I also think dealing with computers more is the better choice.

I'm currently getting an information systems degree, with web development specialization.

So far I haven't learned anything that could directly benefit IM. Most things like coding websites and what not I learned on my own but I'm still early in the program

Computer Science or Engineering. Both pay very well, some of the highest paying "bachelor degree" careers.

I studied engineering as well, and even I think studying engineering specialization will teach you how to conceptualize ideas in your head and actually design them into tangible products. Those are skills that you can apply to any field, even if you never use your engineering degree, so I say go the engineering route. It's tough but well worth it.

Just to toss my bit of two cents in here. I personally study for my upcoming MIS (masters in information sciences). My bachelors was in networking and telecommunications.

Neither of these had anything to do with IM directly, however, my bachelors helped me in project management, giving me the skills to start, control, and complete projects such as product launches.

My MIS is developing training and management (as well as a few accounting skills) that I am using when developing my list of VA's for the projects I am personally in control of.

It really doesnt matter. I believe you should travel towards a degree you can fall back on, because any college degree, I repeat... ANY COLLEGE DEGREE, can help you in your IM pursuance in some manner, no matter how little it may seem at the time.

TO add to this, regardless of your degree, you can simply pick up a book and study a specific skill that will increase your online value, such as PHP, MySQL, and others. Develop some things that people dont just want, they cant live without it. and then JV and market them.

I was an Economics major in college (ended up dropping out 3 years in). Right now I run an SEO company, and have some random passive income sites.

If I were to go back to college, Economics would probably be the best choice for what I'm doing. A quick html class, and maybe a business course or two wouldn't have hurt.

I think that's your problem right there, it's got nothing to do with getting a degree or not.

Personally I majored in English and minored in psychology and I'm doing fine at the IM game. I started off doing a conjoint commerce degree majoring in Marketing, got A+s for everything and dropped that half of my degree - it was way too easy (and this is at one of the top 50 universities in the world at the time). By that stage I had been doing IM for a year and half, voraciously reading everything marketing and advertising related I could find, and knew more than my tutors.

My humanities degree might not be directly applicable to any career but it most certainly extended my thinking ability and thus my earning capacity.

You learn skills on the job - a degree is to expand your mind and give you a sound framework for research, learning and analytical thinking. Do whatever you think is going to be interesting, challenging and relevant to you.

well, I highly regret wasting 4 years of my life....and my major is not something useless like sociology...its a very good major...lots of hard courses, high gpa, but look at me, I am loser.

there was a similar thread like this a while before, a degree cant ever hurt you specially if you are still a young student new to the working world whereever you go most good jobs they wanna see a degree some sort of, but get a IT or computer science degree rather than a web design degree.
