Can anyone give some pointers on how to get traffic from social media instead of totally relying on SEO?

You will have to have have a targeted followers on tweeter and targeted facebook "friends" to your product so that when you will post ad for your product you can expect greater success in traffic and visitors turning into the customers, other wise you will have have use places like youtube and targeted forums to advertise your product. I really don't believe the two are exclusive and SEO techniques can be used to enhance your Web 2.0 efforts. FB, Twitter and YouTube efforts can all be enhanced with some proper backlinking.
