I'm hoping to transition into this full-time sometime next year, but I wonder how folks will react when I tell them I make a living online full-time.

I'd especially like to know this from those of you who are making serious bank!

Also, do you just say I work online, or do you use titles like Internet Marketer, or Internet Entrepreneur when people ask what you do for a living?

Young people are either intrigued or skeptical until you tell them how much you're making. Then they want in it.

Older people are always skeptical and ask a million questions.

Usually I just give a fake, short explanation to avoid a million questions. "I sell shit on eBay". (Not true anymore.) LOL

I would agree with the last post... :) skepticism is huge... people have the "aw that is too bad for you that you fell for an online scam" attitude lol. It's funny but, I usually follow with - but I work my ass off...

Lol I used to be a professional poker player, try explaining that to your buddies... ;)

Some of those sounds cool and most ppl wont understand it:

1. Affiliate manager
2. digital marketing engineer
3. doing high risk investments (aka blackhatter)

and so on... ;p

Their eyes glaze over. They equate working online with selling junk on ebay and to them that is about the same as having a yard sale. I've never sold anything on ebay.

If I tell them I write articles for top websites with deep pockets, they think I'm some kind of Shakespeare or Hemingway. They start talking about the latest book they've read.

Only the family members that I paypal a few thousand dollars to now and then are truly impressed with what I do.

Who cares? It pays the bills and then some.

oooh,

the reacion of people is always skeptical or they just laugh and think that i am kidding ... but i do not care... better you do not even talk about that with extreme conventional especially or old people.

You could really screw with their heads, and tell them you are in the information brokerage business. When they give you the "WTF" look, just smile.

They'll be too afraid of looking like a fool if they start asking questions, and you won't have to explain a thing.

At least they won't walk away thinking, "What a moron, falling for those internet scams..."

As the old saying goes, "If you can't dazzle them with brains, baffle them with bullshit."

I just say I do nothing.
They says so how is things going you must be doing some thing.
I am going without doing any thing...LMAO...what they cant...

They simply don't understand how I make money "just like that" from the internet! One person actually asked me to show him a $100 note as if I get $$$ notes through my Indian bank and stack those bills inside my table drawer after I get paid from my overseas clients.:) Then, they want to know how I am able to deliver work over the internet... some of those guys and gals only look at their orkut(!!!) or watch songs on Youtube, or open an occasional yahoo email.:) A friend has actually preserved millions (well not that too many, lol) of spam emails almost religiously, and on top, he has actually opened and read most of those from top to bottom! :)

Talk about Paypal and even my banker isn't convinced that Paypal exists. Most Indian online workers would agree with me when I say that our Indian bankers don't know that there is indeed an online thing called Paypal!!! Well, most indeed have a FB account though and they seem to be deeply engrossed in finding if they have received any comment/message from a friend!

I live in a small but very lovely town, but I have noticed such e-ignorance even in bigger towns and cosmopolitan cities!

P.S.: Once I was explaining to my friend how a work is done and sold over the internet, his better half -- in more sense than one, wisely pointed my printer to her husband and said that when the buyer sends the money to me, I would easily print it out from my printer -- she made the whole concept of making online money so simple!... I almost choked to death then as she revealed her cool and awesome wisdom... Not to blame her because she has been in awe at how easily she gets money through the ATM's slots and how easily she can hand over her debit card at the BigBazaar counter. hahaha

Another one: a friend always reads an online newspaper daily, 4-5 times a day, and he once told me how great those newspaper owners are because they are saving the trees from being cut down to manufacture paper. He told me that he wants the government to make it compulsory for the newspapers to be online ONLY and the printed form should be banned. And the newspaper and the internet should be free so that the nation can save the valuable natural resources (trees) -- end of all eco problems! I sincerely agreed with him wholeheartedly as he insisted that the internet should be made completely free just like the TV is, and radio was (so that the ISPs don't charge us -- his logic: if radio was free and the TV is free, why we have to pay to get internet connection? A very valid argument)!

The point is:
Once they ask me about my online work and I start to tell them, they will stop my speech and begin to tell their own stories about their internet experience... and I allow them to divert and speak a lot (about whatever) so that I don't have to explain a lot.:D

Hm...like half my income is passive, so I occasionally like to say I "do nothing." And they are like, "Well how do you make money and pay for all this shit you have?" And I stick with "I do nothing." As in: "I don't know man, I just know I keep getting this random money all the time."

Other times I keep it simple and say I do online advertising.

Or I'll drag them over to a computer and show them every single website I own. That usually makes them sorry they even asked. And maybe I'll get them to fill out a CPA form while they're at it.

Or if it's an old person who looks at me like I'm a teenage turd, I tell them I provide design, marketing, and consulting services for corporations downtown.

I thought I was the only one. I love what I do so I get excited to tell people what I do. But, quickly I remember the look I get from almost everyone. The puzzled are you kidding look.

I even had close friends tell me that it was just a dream and to grow up. Like no one makes money online, just amazon and home depot.

My dad still doesn't belief me even after I show him the orders I make each day. I still don't get it.

I think people are naturally retarded. To look outside the box is a gift in truly one world of fucked up retards.

I recently started telling people I own porn sites (which I dont) then I would give them the URL of my fav porn site. They actually are intrigued by this, give it a try haha
