Cell Phone text message spam? (poll)

Theres already a cell phone text sender out. I am trying to find a person to crack the software. If theres any cracker jacks out there that wants the link for this product let me know. Its pretty nice product.

Yep, and when they respond to the text it is sent back to your email. I do it all the time because I only have 200 texts per month, so I either email from my phone or laptop, and it works like a charm.

Spamming people with SMS is a bad idea, and in any country where most mobile users actually pay to get a text message, it opens up the sender to massive legal troubles.

For instance, in the US, 4t&t charges something like $.20 per text, if you don't have a plan, or if you go over your plan. If someone spams 30K numbers on that network, a judge is not going to have too much trouble deciding that it is OK to determine that said campaign did $6K in damages. Probably more, because if enough people get pissed, they will scream at their carrier, and their carrier will reverse the charges, and then go after the spammer for a) the lost revenue, b) the overhead to to administrate the reversal of charges, and c) the legal fees for recovering their damages. If they get a really friendly judge, they might go for punitive damages on top of that.

On top of that, what could you possibly promote this way that would not have just about any network out there pull your card for using this form of promotion? Sure, sending a few hundred messages might stay under the radar, but what the hell could you promote a few hundred messages at a time that would be worth the trouble?

If you want a real SMS winner, figure out a way to go viral, and get people to text each other, for you, and do something like the "ihateyoujulia" thing, except with sms instead of email. That is something that I would be interested in.

That's already been done years ago. But before you start playing the viral game you have to understand how to scale a system rapidly. Other wise you find yourself with server/s and code that can't handle the massive sudden increase in traffic & alot of pissed of users. You only get one chance with viral ideas.

The best place to start if you are really interested in this stuff is to read up on media virus's and how they work. Douglas rushkoff wrote a good introduction in '96 with a book called "media virus"

A basic example of a viral idea is a joke. if a joke is really funny everyone in that group that first heard it will share it with their friends. and there friends will share, etc, etc.

A media virus has a trojan inside of a viral idea. There are sms based media virus systems with the trojan been a Viral SMS invitation system & it makes its money off advertising.

Well, actually, being able to scale up and handle the traffic is really what I had in mind.

Obviously a little social engineering is all it takes to start a chain letter, but I take your point.

Yes me and friend had made a little tool in Java, Rogers "phone company in canada" gave him a call. If someone can teach me how to hide info in cell that would be soo awesome...

i think you would make allot more $$ if you commissioned someone to make you a program out of it. So someone could download and sms "bomb" there ex or whoever they had a grudge against

also you could make 2 versions, one for the public and another for business "for spamming"... just market it and throw a price tag on it.

I came up with the idea a few years ago because i was actually looking for a sms bomber to get back at an ex girlfriend ... i ended up just writing a script that sent her 1 message every minute ... very effective

ive got a way to get all major carrier emails starting from 0000-9999 the only thing is youll never know wich numbers are in service and wich ones arent but doing simple math on a ok return rate and promoting somthing like a $10 ringtone offer theres tons of money there waiting to be made!

What exactly do you mean by this? I thought that way you do an email->SMS is just [phonenumber]@[carrierdomain

Well, I can tell you from personal work experience over 3 years with a cell phone company that sending messages through email to a [email protected] o m would be a very bad idea, because most likely it's receiving through the MMS protocol, not SMS. Most people don't subscribe to MMS bundles, so basically, you'd end up costing each person you spammed X dollars per message. Sometimes $2.00 USD or so..

Believe me. Steer VERY clear from this method of contacting text "subscribers" What you need to make this 'acceptable' spam is to clear each number through the do not call registry (for US, at least) AND...

Text message from a true SMS terminal, whether you anonymously subscribe to a website that can send mass txt messages or know a sales rep who works for a cellphone company. NOT A DEALER

IMO, I wouldn't do text message advertising because of the legalities on top of all the things I mentioned above. I would report you if I were charged for spam that was delivered to my MMS inbox; So at least make sure you're sending the messages through the correct protocol, and not just sending messages to some list of cellphone email submits that you bought from the net. lol

Each carrier delivers their sms differently..depends on the switch settings. Usually they'll post their configurations on their websites to their customers, (www)account manager, or can be found in their FAQ section.

Bluetooth method, now I'd go for a cheaper solution than http://www.*lue*litz.com (replace * with b). btw, I don't endorse them and am in no way affiliated. I just thought it was a cool idea to get it cheaper than what they're selling it for Good luck. Questions, feel free to pm

There's this guy on Skype that keeps promoting his SMS bomber program - $500 which is a complete joke. It basically connects to the big G and randomly selects numbers to hit. The problem is, it uses the SMTP gateway, which makes it considered as "spam." After reading more into this, it appears that an SMS terminal would be the most efficient way, even though it will cost money to setup. The thing is, the SMS terminals don't use an SMTP gateway so it has nothing to do with spam!

I'm sure there's a way to set things up with a VPS to send text spam but you'd have to really be anonymous... Perhaps:

1. Register a domain with a fake IP address, name and credit card (do your research)
2. You have to purchase a VPS (~$20/m) to send more than 500 emails an hour

The only problem is, what are you selling? If it's your own product, then they will contact you since you're making money. If you're an affiliate, then they can contact your affiliate manager to get you shutdown or for your contact information (you have to get paid right?).

It appears there's easy ways to make money but the fines kind of outweigh the benefits?
