What is Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 link pushing?

A tier refers to how far out the link is from your root domain.

Link pushing is a SEO technique... Basically it's a large web of backlinks eventually pointing to your site.

Tier is one of two or more rows, levels, or layers arranged one above another.
Basically it means that links do not point to your money site, some of the links point to other links, they point to other, and those other finally point to you. The link juice is flowing through all of them, without the real menace to your site.

i knew what the tiers were, i guess my real question was to the purpse of the tiers, but it all makes sense now.

1) increase value of the links
2) prevent sand boxing

As a follow up, I would like to ask this.

Are blog comments, articles and profile comments all considered in the tier2, tier3 and tier 1 links?

If so... would it work like this:

Tier 3: 3 blog comment and forum profiles links to an article posted using AMR.
Tier 2: The AMR article has links to Blog#1
Tier 1: Blog #1 has direct links to the "money site"

Yeah pretty much. Which tier you're linking to is what determines which tier you're working on. So if you're making a link to your money site they you're working on a Tier 2 page, if making a link to a Tier 1 page then you're working on a Tier 2 page, etc.

In fact if you were to have 2 backlinks in a blog article, one linking to a Tier 2 page and another linking to a Tier 1 page, then that particular blog could be considered both a Tier 3 page and a Tier 2 page at the same time. I wouldn't recommend overdoing that, but it can be done some.

Also some backlinks such as blog posts, articles sites, etc. will be natural tiers to build more links to, but sites with blog comments and other low power pages are less natural to build more links to. ( I hope that makes sense, I'm not sure that's a very good explanation.)

Well it just depends on how much work you want to do. If you have a few Tier one sites that get continually updated, then they'll tend to develop into higher value sites linking to your main site. But if you have a lot of them it may be unrealistic to keep updating all of them. It'll still work either way.

One thing to remember though is it's best to have some decent quality especially on the top tiers, so if your spun articles are seeming kind of spammy you'll want to use them on the lower tiers.

It isn't like there's a single perfect way to set it up. When it's done right it should resemble organic natural links, but there's a lot of ways to do that. That's the point of Link Pushing - to create a certain amount of randomness in your link building (so as to not leave any obvious footprints), while at the same time having some control over the link juice flowing up through the tiers to your money site.

you can use the same content and spin it. Just don't spin it so much as to make it senseless.

As long as backlinks are considered as an indicator of a pages value, they can never really phase out tiered linking. When done right it's the closest approximation or natural organic linking, which is the foundation of how Google sorts it's indexes.

Just making a tiered pyramid of sites and using them over and over is an easy footprint to identify. The sites you're building links on are easy to judge for quality. The overall process of linkbuilding has to take that into account as Google adjusts for it, but there's really no way to "phase out" tiered linking altogether. Not without "phasing out" natural organic linking as well.

All that Panda really does is make the quality of what your doing much more important.

Like I said earlier, there's no best answer for a lot of this. It's not so much how many tier 1 sites you want, its a matter of how fast you add them. Best bet is to make a few, then build a few tier 2 sites to those, then build a few more tier 1 sites, then a few tier 2 sites to each of those. Then build some tier 3 sites to them all. Then build a few more tier 1, then a few more tier 2, etc. When you get to tier 4 you can start using mostly straight backlinks like blog commenting, etc. No sense in spending too much time building quality pages when you get past 2 or 3 tiers. Maybe over time build some quality pages at tier 4 and above, but only if you feel like it and have some time.

See the theme here? There isn't a set number, not for how wide to build the tiers or how deep. Just start making them and building backlinks. All that your doing with the web 2.0 tiers is creating higher quality backlinks.

Over time as you keep making pages, you might spend more time on some and create additional money sites from them.
