I agree with the above post!
I get maybe 1-2 web design contracts a month (I freelance in my spare time afterwork) and it all comes from word of mouth.
Come to think of it I haven't ever gotten a client through just my website.
Start with your family and friends - it's easy enough to put out a few feelers via email - chances are at LEAST 1 person needs a website of some sort.
Charge them a nice cheap fee - if it's your first site it's gonna suck anyway
My freelance work started as follows:
First site: For a sister of a friend - owns a gym
Second Site: Referral from first site
Third Site: Referral from family member
Fourth - Eighth Site: Done while employed full time as web designer for a law firm.
Eighth + : All referrals from prior clients!
The more pages you have in your portfolio the more you can charge as well. Once you have a good portfolio built finding clients becomes a lot easier.
I've also had some luck finding clients on Craigslist - lots of folks looking for web design there. Just send over your portfolio and pray
