Question about keyword research via google adwords tool

I am not completely understanding this. I have been doing keyword research to find some new niches. What I have been finding is...keywords/longtail keywords that have roughly 2,500-5,000 local searches (the range I'm looking for) and google is showing them at a low competition rate. Mind you that I AM searching in the "exact" not "broad".

But when I go to google and type the "keyword" I get like 350k-2.5M pages/results? and some there are even big name or high ranking sites at #1. Am I missing something? how does google consider this low competition? Is it even worth the time and effort to go for these keywords?

Make sure you are using quotations so you will get exact searches instead of general searches..

You always want to search exactly. so "keywords" instead of keywords

I am no guru, but this seems to be what I have noticed as well.


Also consider that some things will show through Adwords as being "low competition" because a company (or a few) have basically 100% control over that keyword. Therefore there is no competition because no one can take that from them. For example (I think I used before somewhere) Magic: The Gathering is a "low competition" keyword for Adwords, that is because Wizards of the Coast owns Magic: The Gathering. Really anyone searching for that will automatically go to the WoTC site, as it is a good site with tons and tons and tons of info. There is not much need to go anywhere else but the Wizards site.

Yes, this is correct. You need kws with HIGH AdWords competition, as that means there's a high demand for traffic for that kw, thus making for much easier monetization. You can still have high AW competition and fairly low organic search competition.

Both Market Samurai and SERPAttacks have nice tools for evaluating SEO competition for a keyword. They will show you inURL, inTitle, stuff like that.
