Newbie Question: what is too many backlinks

I have a PR5 well respected UK business website but I want to start ranking for a new keyword phrase. I'm a little worried about getting too many links to my site at once as all the links that go to the site have been generated naturally.

I've been looking at the fiverr post and have been dipping my toe in the water with using them, but am worried about going for the xrumer options, or linkwheel / pyramid options as I really can't afford to get de-indexed as it would have a massive impact on my business.

Would you recommend a slow and steady approach? Should I purchase any of these bulk link building options?

I also purchased Scrapebox myself some time ago, but never used it. I guess I'm very nervous about messing up 3 years of work with some misjudged link building tactics so am just looking for a bit of expert advice.

I'm sure there's better people to answer this post, but I think the idea is you link to your site from another site then do all your link blasting to that site and the PR will filter down to your main site.

I would be very cautious about blasting your main site direct if you have worked on it White hat for so long!

Think about it.. if there was a certain amount of backlinks that was "too much" you could simply build that many backlinks to competitors sites to get them knocked off the top spots.

In reality you can't have too many, it will not adversely effect ranking, but you need enough of the good quality ones mixed with some low quality ones to get a great ranking.

Its about getting a natural link profile, combined with good on-site content.

Do not do Xrumer/Scrapebox directly to your money site. If you go this
route, at least send all the links to another domain and 301 redirect it
to your money site. This way you will have an opportunity to "switch off"
these links by removing 301 redirect.

Linkwheel / pyramid will not get you de-indexed. The worst that can happen is they might not work.

Slow is not necessarily better. Being consistent is the key.

The biggest problems with de-indexing and lost of ranking, I believe, are
the following.

1. Scraped content on a money site or satellite sites (autoblog farms, etc).
2. Flat links profile.

I think the majority of established sites that got hit by Panda and lost
ranking have flat link profile.

What I mean by that is they have tins of good links but they are all going
directly to the money site. They might have everything. Social bookmarks,
high quality Web 2.0, high quality articles, video, press releases. But the
problem is there's only one layer of links. That's why I build pyramids. Even
out of simple Web 2.0 properties.

If the site already has trust, its safer to push more links and of course better to use Linkwheel / pyramids as was suggested.

The conservative approach is to add what the site normally gets in natural backlinks on a daily basis. But given that you have a pr5 site, that have a lot of lead way with it because its already a highly trusted site.

Always think "My competition could spam me with links to get me out of the way" When you consider building links. It sets your mind at ease, No matter how new/how old the website be.

I would suggest you not to use Xrumer and Scrapebox...

Since you cannot afford to lose your website, its better to handpick websites for link building.

Also, do not buy links, it is against search engine's guidelines.
