Some questions about Link Building

I have to admit I am a novice in internet marketing and grateful to have found out about this site. I had been reading many posts, while I gain some knowledge, I was left a bit confused, perhaps someone can clarify my doubts for me.

1. Regarding backlink, I understand a high PR site is worth more than one with low PR. Does anyone what is the weightage like? Would be the minimum PR status should be considered for Sep purposes?

2. Why does edu, gov considered to be better for link building

3. do follow and no follow sites affect link building? if it does matter than which would be better.

4. twitter and Google have PR 10, but is it possible to get link from then? if yes the how can do it?

5. I have heard that some sites have gone from PR0 - PR4 overnight and some have rating drop from PR6 to PR2, I like to know why does this happen? Anyway to prevent rating from dropping?

1. no one knows to what level google weighs each PR link. Some have said thing like 1000 PR0s = PR1, 1000 PR1 = PR2.. Or something like that. What "minimum" PR should you go for? All of them. You want your site to look natural to google which would have links from all PRs. A good strategy might be to get "crap" PR0 - PRx links using some bulk method and then do high PR links like PR6, 7 etc. by hand.

2. They're viewed as more trustworthy.

3. do follow would be better. But again, you want your linking to look "natural" so you want both. These days people view a link as a link regardless of what pr or whether it's do follow or not.. Most important thing is to just get a ton of them and ideally from contextual pages. A link within the text from a page talking about weight loss to a page about weight loss has a lot more value regardless of PR. Unless of course it's like PR0 or not even indexed etc.

4. The main page of those sites is PR10 or whatever and you can't get a link from those pages.. It's the PR of the page you're linked from that matters.. and yes, you can get links on twitter and google. But of course those pages will probably have a PR 0 to start.

5. Given the visible PR is only updated every few months, a site can't go from 0 to 4 overnight. Just appears that way. Clearly those sites were new or at 0, there was a bunch of link building done and then the next PR update it shows as being a 4. Dropping from 6 to 2 means they lost a lot of backlinks or a lot of their backlinks were devalued by google. Not much you can do except build quality backlinks.

ALL links count. I'm pretty sure no one knows how much weight google places for each PR.

because only people with some authority are allowed to register such domain extensions (government, schools...). Obviously the content from them would be more reliable than from typical people with their .com .net domains hence why google pushes those sites to the top.

sure, if you go deeper into their sites I'm sure you can find a place where they allow user input where you could post your links. Here is one from google:

One by one answer to your queries

1. It is believed that getting linked to high PR websites will result in PR sculpting... For, me website's authority and its relevance to my niche is far more important than its PR.

2. Backlinks coming from .edu domain and .gov domains are like any other domain. Matt Cutts has said that backlinks from these domains are beneficial if and only if these .edu and .gov websites are authority websites. It they like any other ordinary website, backlink won't get any special weight.

3. From backlinking credit stand point ******** backlinks are good. But for referral traffic, both type of backlinks behave in same way.

4. Yes, it is possible to get backlinks from twitter... You can add you link in your bio section or in your tweets.
You can get backlink from Google, since all the backlinks outgoing links on Google are nofollow you won't get any backlinking credit.

5. Your quality of backlinks determine your PR... If your quality of backlinks degraded or nofollow attribute is killing your backlinks, your PR may fall.

All the answers posted so far are great. It is a little bit off topic but I think it's important. If your new to seo, make sure you learn everything there is to know about on-page seo before jumping into the back-link game. Its really important and you can actually achieve a lot with your on-page if you know what your doing. Anyway just a suggestion, take it or leave it.

Just find the links they already publish, then look at the source code of the page, you want to see a simple a href link, if it says no follow that's a give away!

If it's build with JS that's bad also, I think.

Press Ctrl+U in your browser to see its sourcecode and hit Ctrl+F to search for

<a href="

and have a look if those links you find have either

rel="do follow" (without the space)
or
rel="nofollow"

Technically there is no such thing as a do follow tag. People may use them but they don't actually mean or do anything. Either the link has nofollow or it doesn't (absence of nofollow means do follow).
