And if you take the gig but can't bother to actually do it for more than a month - please expect to see an entry on the shit list.

I just want to find a responsible, competent person who wants to make money by writing good reviews and articles. Too much to ask?

I know this is not what you're looking for but you might want to try https://www.odesk.com/. I've found some awesome writers there. Not everyone here is so hard up for cash that they will drop their projects to write, especially people in English speaking countries.

Odesk is the way to go dude. Super cheap and good work. Only problem is you might have a difficult time finding somebody American to apply. Just keep reposting the job until you get somebody.

You can also look through the contractors on there and filter for US only. And then try to recruit that way.

This is a much better option than bitching on a message board.

I'm trying to set my writer friend (American) up with some writing gigs. If nothing else, his content will have character (he's a fiction writer). He's intelligent though, so I'm sure he can write about anything that he can research on google. I've worked with him a bit on the concepts of SEO and keyword density. I can have him write an example article based on your specifications.

His fees are $10 for a 500+ word article that requires research (in this case, understanding the product you want reviewed). If the keyword is more generic, or you need multiple articles on the same subject, the fee is $8 for a $500+ word article.

I'm also in the process of setting up a BST thread on here for his services, plus the option for some SEO linkbuiding services (submit spun article to web2.0 blogs, directories, etc), if any of that interests you as well.

That's why I hadn't gone to odesk, my impression from poking around the various freelancing sites (and trying one or two) was that native English speakers were pretty much non-existent there.

And my goal here wasn't bitching - it was mainly scaring away the people who say "Well, I don't fit what he's looking for, but I'll give it a shot anyway." My experience over the years is that otherwise, you get buried in emails/PMs from outsourcing companies and individuals who are just "taking a chance."

(Well, OK, I *was* bitching a little lol, but only because a guy who was gung-ho for the job and took half-payment within minutes of accepting the job, is now feeding me three articles a week and cavalierly telling me "Sorry, I had to write an e-book.")

All depends on the quality of the samples and the quoted price. If you're asking me if I'm trying to get away with paying $2.50 an article, the answer is no.

Yeah, I thought about that, but I'm really looking for someone to write long-term for me, and most of the fiverr people I've dealt with are more about the one-time hits. I figured trying to sort through fiverr people would be even more difficult than odesk or other outsourcer sites - and that someone looking for a long-term gig would be more likely to be looking here (or somewhere similar).

I'll give it a little while here to see what (if anything) comes up, and then try another avenue. Thanks for the help.

As a one-time professional writer and teacher, I value good writing - and can't imagine purchasing a product after reading a review written in pidgin English. On the other hand, I also understand and appreciate the value of a dirt-cheap article that's being used on a web 2.0 site or article directory for SEO purposes.

It just so happens that these articles will be placed on sites where I'm trying to sell product --- so the quality is important (at least to me lol).

I know your frustrated man but thats on par for hiring on a message board. Everyone has been burned with bad service at least once.

But anyways, I checked odesk and their are 120 contractors working for under 10 an hour. Contact them directly with work.Test them to see if they can meet your workload and then slowly give them more work. It is better to work with smaller hours or jobs because people make it look like they are working when they are not.

I would set a bar and test the waters. Maybe 1500 words an hour.

I have gotten some great native english speaking writers from odesk.
Just put that into your description - that you only want native-english speaking workers from english-speaking countries.

Here (as an example) is a list of odesk writers who have been logged into odesk in the last 2 weeks (in other words, they are still active), they all have 4-5 star ratings and are located in the USA or Canada:

Forget mainstream platforms. It's like looking for delicacies in a supermarket. The country of origin does not really matter btw. If someone is good, they won't waste time with portals feeding on dumping. I was recently checking on the orwellian claims about Singapore... the language skills of participating people from Asia was amazingly good.

Great articles are just too expensive for plain SEO but when you are selling stuff like you plan to, $15 to $20 pieces will do wonders. Post jobs on colleges, most have free online boards just for that. Contact teachers, blog authors, wikipedia contributors. In business, you only place a job listing when you are desperate, have exhausted any other active way to find someone suitable.
