Creating your own Web 2.0

Well since Web 2/social networking sites are quite a big factor out of today's SEO pie, why not create own Web 2.0 with your own twist and that way you can be more in control. If all goes well, you could even score up with some Silicon (Silycon - couldn't resist that) Valley Venture Capitalist.

When Facebook started, there was many strong competitors already such as Friendster and Myspace--and now look where its at now. Even Facebook copied heavily from Friendfeed.

Anybody tried doing this route?

I'm in the process of doing this, but I'm looking for a platform to take off from. The open source stuff out there is encouraging, but none of them hold a candle to the established ones.

Suggestions are welcome.

If you are looking for a twitter type clone, there is StatusNet - they have an open source version.

Sure, if it were as easy as it sounds. Creating/cloning an existing system is the easy part. Getting users to share (hence web 2.0) content - specifically quality content - is much much harder. Then you have to consider quality control, spam monitoring, etc. You would have to spend all of your time on this to even have a chance at success. VC firms (believe it or not) don't just hand money out to anyone that can code up an app to share data. So you gotta pick your focus - start a company (web 2.0 site) or SEO your existing data. One or the other has to take a back seat and will likely be crushed by people who's sole focus is beating you (and any other competitors).

Traction is the keyword here. Traction generates a larger user base which allows you to generate an active social application. No one wants to use clones except spammers and a handful of idealists. Without the user base you do not have a web 2.0 site.
