EDIT: seems 'do_follow' (without underscore) is blocked, hence the title.

I have a quick question... hopefully somebody can shed some light on it:

Would a backlink from a PR9 site (that is not of a relevant industry) still do any good? I mean, it's a PR9 which is massive, but it's not relevant to my site niche.

It's a site that my close friend owns and operates, and we were just discussing what kind of weight his PR9 would push onto an external site of non-relevance. The page with the PR9 is his homepage, and there are less than 10 other links on the page pointing to other resources.

This is NOT paid, or anything along those lines... just an informative request.

And do not bother asking for the domain as I would be doing him a great injustice by giving it out... could only imagine the flood of emails he'd start receiving. Plus, he's not into selling links anyways.

Is this a no-brainer? I mean, it's technically "white-hat" as there is no passing of funds... but I do understand that Googlebot might not see it that way. A PR9 is crazy hard to pass up though!

Thoughts please...

Why wouldn't you just do it, and wait 2 weeks to see if you see any results from the link? Is there a reason NOT to do it?

Well, there's always a buzz around what might look like a "paid link"... don't need my site (or more so his as he'd be the one that would get it worse) getting penalized. That's all.

Just wanted to see if anybody had any thoughts on whether it was entirely worth it because of the complete irrelevance between our 2 sites.

Paid links are found through manual investigation. I have never heard of someone getting penalized for having a non-paid link on a site, and I have never heard of a site getting penalized to linking to someone elses site.

If it is legit, I wouldn't worry. Legit websites do not worry about this. If they want to put a link on their site, they just do it. If your friends site is legit and you are not paying him, he has nothing to worry about.

If there is a "google bot" that could find paid links, it would do site by crawling referral pages and the pages of forums like BHW and DP and looking for pages which contain the URL of the website and strings of words like "selling links" "selling PR" "high pr link for sale" etc. But I dont think that is possible.

A PR9 of any kind would be extremely helpful, if anything to build your PR

It doesnt matter if its relevant, a PR9 is a PR9 period ! Of course maybe you would get extra credit if it was a relevant but its still a pr9 so go for it !

Great points. I guess it's just a bit of paranoia setting in, but for no real reason.

It was just due to the irrelevance of the two sites.

A PR 9 should give quite a boost though, no?

All the knowledge we have tell us yes, it should. But it depends also on what type of site you are promoting. We don't know the competition or the niche. We also don't know what you consider quite a boost. Are you expecting to jump from position 100 to top 10? Are you expecting to move 1-2 spots higher? Are you going to be targeting a keyword using anchor text? What are you currently ranked for that keyword?

ANY kind of such high PR backlink make huge results to you is 100%.

I would too just go for it :) Good luck!

How does PR 7 compare? I have a couple K fresh ones..

I say DO IT!!! Make a little 2-3 sentence blurb with the link in an anchor text, get creative and make a connection between your site and your friends. You'd be crazy not to.
