Can you possibly outrank Wikipedia?

For example, my niche is about "AAA", so I tend to focus keywords on it. However Wikipedia ranks first for "aaa". Is it even remotely possible for me to outrank Wikipedia in this case for "dogs" since it's gobbling up massive traffic while not generating any revenue?

It was simply used as an example. Of course I wouldn't try to rank in that already saturated keyword. I'm talking about other, less competitive niches with Wikipedia in the way.

I see, in which case yes, it's certainly possible. Wikipedia achieve great rankings from their amazing internal linking structure and this can be hard to beat in some cases, it all depends on the keyword but it's certainly possible.

Of course it is possible. It's possible to outrank anything with enough time.

The question is whether or not it's worth it to spend that time ranking for that keyword

Do you need to outrank wikipedia? If you are offering/promoting something I don't think it is such a big deal to come in second. Wikipedia is just general information.

Wikipedia is easy to outrank, I do it on a regular basis. They have huge domain authority but not necessarily page authority. Don't be intimidated. Just go about your business as usual. One sneaky trick you can do is to actually go in and delete any external links and mark them as spam. The idea is that the webmasters from those sites get pissed and remove any backlinks they have to that wiki page. I got that one from bluehatseo.com. never tried it (never had to) but it might help.

Depending on your keywords it might be medium difficulty to extremely hard. I've yet to outrank them myself but, haven't done any hardcore seo quite yet either.

Depends on your niche.
If its a information niche, its going to be pretty hard. I.e. dogs, cats, water, aluminum etc...
If its not, its very doable.

If you have a $xxx,xxx annual budget for SEO, sure, you can think about it.
We have outranked Wikepedia and Yahoo answers for quite a few keywords for some of our clients however, they had fairly lower competition as compared to "dogs".

For a keyword like dogs, you aren't just going to have to beat wikipedia but you will be competing against a bunch of other authority sites too. You'll have to work your way up the ranking pages and it is going to take a long long time.

It depends a lot of the no. of backlinks to the specific page. One challenge is that a lot of the links going into wiki is of a high quality.

But just take your time to analyse the links and make your strategy from there.

There have also been a few good tricks in this tread - but see how long you get with a basic baklink plan.
